File under "Things you find on the internet while looking for other things": I knew that NOAA has a pretty comprehensive network of weather stations and bouys, but I didn't know this:

Since the facilities are operated by NOAA, I presume the purpose is to aid in weather forecasting, not surveillance of ships.
