Right now I don't have a motor on my 1987 Guardian 18. The specified weight is 1,750-lbs. How much extra weight would be added by a dive door? What constitutes dry weight?

Is there a reason why your are looking for a precise weight target? The published weights are openly admitted to be best guess averages. No two boats ever rolled off the line weighing the same. And I am willing to bet in the commercial group those variances could be significant. The 18 hulls could vary by 100 -> maybe 200+lbs depending in who was doing the lay-up. Also adding a dive door increases the weight and adds another variable to possible overall weight.

My understanding is the weight of boat with standard hardware, console, and fuel tank, but without engine and associate controls, steering cable etc.

Understanding my hull's history is important to me. When I read the term bare hull weight, I'd like to know what that means. I would like to know what years the hulls had 1,750 as a best guess average, as you wrote. Were the 18 Guardian and Outrage hulls the same dead rise and style for a certain number of years? What years did they change?

I had a 1985 Outrage 18, and this 18 Guardian I have seems to look different to me. Maybe I'm crazy and the hull is the same dead rise, the sides are the same height, maybe not. I'm just learning all I can. I wrote to Boston Whaler to see how many of these were made with dive doors, but they weren't able to give me a number.. That's more history I'd like to learn about if anyone has such a production number.

In Boston Whaler specifications, the meaning of a particular term is usually explained in the footnotes under the specifications.

In the 1987 catalogue for Commercial Products the specifications use the term "boat weight". The specified boat weight for a GUARDIAN 18 is 1,750-lbs. The term "boat weight" is defined in a footnote. The footnote says:

"Weight is for outboard boat. Sterndrives 900 to 1,500-lbs heavier, depending on engine choice."

I don't know where you read the term "bare hull weight." I do not see it used in the catalogue of Boston Whaler commercial hulls in 1987.

If Boston Whaler has no records that can be consulted to determine the number of hulls made with a particular option such as a dive door, it seems extraordinarily unlikely that some other source might have more definitive data on that topic.

The extra weight added by a dive door is not given in any catalogue reference that I can find. I suggest you assume the dive door added about 100-lbs.

To find the present weight of your boat, I suggest taking it to a scale and having it weighed.

A good definition of dry weight is given at

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dry_weight

If you want to research the exact specifications published by Boston Whaler in their literature over the years for a specific model, a good start in that research is to obtain copies of all the catalogues. Once you have copies of all the literature published, you could begin your research to see if any specification changed slightly from year to year for one particular model.
