Holy Cow... I knew Chuck long before I met him here, we had mutual interest in diving with rebreathers and began a long correspondance over 20 years ago, in the very infancy of the internet. Bad news, but glad to know.

I'm truly shocked to hear of this. Gall bladder and bile duct cancer, the silent killers- once signs appear the ball game is usually over. Chuck was one of the leaders of our little NorCal whalers group long with Tony Wilde (elaelap). Chuck was youthful for his age, bright-eyed, 200% full of life, impossibly intelligent, and so passionate about everything. He will be sorely missed. My condolences to Linda, to whom he referred as "The Admiral" JimL |

Deepest condolences to Linda and family. Chuck was an amazing guy and an inspiration to all things nature, ocean, and dive boats. I always admired his vision and energy to explore anything. He is a brilliant photographer and an encyclopedia of wisdom and data. It would be just like Chuck to say nothing of his illness. He was all about life and planning the next five trip and whaler party. So long Chuck. I will remember all your talent, wisdom and whaler tips like you just told me yesterday. Steve |

I have a little bit more to say.. Scrolling through the photos Warren posted above reminds me of so many good times and life long friendships that were forged directly or indirectly through this website. Chuck's knowledge base in electronics, boating, diving, electronics, and so much more made him an invaluable resource. He was also a very giving and kind person. He would always offer his house up to travelers, his time, and his knowledge on issues. Many heated debates (on technical grounds only!) were always fun to read and always brought a smirk to my face. Chuck's sense of humor was always on. I mostly knew him through the scubaboard and here on CW. Over the last decade we got together a handful of times, and I have also experienced Chuck through other divers in Monterey that I have met up with. Chuck was the unofficial "Mayor" of SCUBA in Northern California. You will be missed Chuck. Steve |

I've been here a long time. To me, it was a given that I'd read something from Chuck nearly every day. It's kind-of hard to imagine this "place" without him. |

I am shocked and saddened to hear this news. My condolences to Linda and to all of Chuck's family and friends. Chuck was an absolute prince of a man; kind, friendly and smart as a whip. I met him in person at the first NorCal Whaler Rendezvous in 2001, and he was a fixture at every one since then. Chuck really knew how to live life to the fullest, and stories and photos from his diving and boating adventures held the fascination of all who were lucky enough to share in them. He was always so kind to my kids, who grew up at those early Rendesvous', and that is something I will always remember about him. Fair winds and following seas dear Chuck, you will be missed. -Andy http://smg.photobucket.com/user/andygere/library/Chuck?sort=3&page=1 |

Great video, Pete. There is something about those west Coast guys. They were very knowledgable about Boston Whalers, as many are, but those guys also had alot of class. Its something you have or don't have, can't learn class. Very sad to learn of Chucks passing. rich |

Hmm, I wonder if Jock Marlo has heard about this. As some may remember, when Chuck grounded his boat at a NorCal rendevous, Jock Marlo went in his tight-ie white-ies to try to help them. He was very kind to me, sent me little things for my boat. Class act. Who can forget his detailed recommendations for turning a classic Montauk into the ultimate dive boat, or the sadness when he lost his friend and underwater photographer, Kawika Chetron. A good being. Feeling a little crushed right now. |

Lizard, I witnessed the "whitey tightey" event from the shallow gunnels of my old 17. It was a hilarious, fun, and good natured situation. Andy Gere was on hand to help, Tony, Matt, and several others if memory serves. Chuck was good about it and popped a brew, grabbed his camera and waited out the tide. Tony told me another Chuck Tribolet story about an earlier rendezvous in which someone had dropped something into the water, or had some issue, where Chuck strapped on a mask and fins and jumped into the water to retrieve the item. A couple of us here in Nor Cal have whalers that haven't seen a bath in years, and lack a certain... well... original appearance..maybe like a "hurricane survivor" or something like that. Chuck would refer to these as "nice work boats". That title stuck with my boat and forever after Loolee 3 has become that boat. I'm proud of my "work boat" I hope some folks have other stories to share about Chuck, or any of our members who have departed us... to me that is the greatest honor to pay them... a great narrative. Chuck dove off of the dock into some very murky delta water at the very first NorCal Rendezvous to retrieve Jim Hooper's digital camera. I don't rembemer if the camera survived, but I was amazed at how quickly he found it. I did indeed witness the grounding just outside the Petaluma River, along with the famous Marlo attempted rescue. Chuck thought nothing of spending the afternoon grounded on the mud with Linda watching all the wildlife in the area until the tide floated them free. During another Petaluma Rendezvous (or maybe it was the same one), we took the boats into the turing basin and tied up for dinner. On the town dock, we ran into a group of attractive young women that were on some type of scavenger hunt, perhaps for their sorority. They needed to have their photo taken on a boat, so naturally Chuck volunteered. Not only did he get them their photo, he took them for a spin around the basin, which they seemed to really enjoy. http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v408/andygere/2007%20Rendezvous/ IMG_2446.jpg |

A slap in the back, ,A shared joke and a following wink about a known subject.. The inside track on some local Whaler rumors never ever were shared between "Chuck" and I ...from our respective Western Sea areas. I nevertheless feel compelled to give Chuck homage and congratulations on living a great life..holding to his Guns and Convictions. Time for him to move on to bigger and better things.. I will hope and to periodically entertain us with his past singular Ideas and comments. My Respects to his Family and Friends. |

Warren--Many thanks for giving us that link to a good photograph of Chuck. I hope Chuck knew of the very high regard in which he was held by so many other participants here. That so much has been said after his passing makes me think we ought to be more active in telling people we highly regard that we hold those opinions while they are still around to hear them. |
