We had some fun a few years ago with favorite books and reading.... this time I would love to see if we can find some great shorter quotes either from personal events and anecdotes or from literature. Here is my personal favorite quote which comes from Richard Henry Dana (Two Years Before The Mast), who is paraphrasing captian Frank Thompson on a Nantucket based trading ship from around 1820 or so...a man who was fed up with a crew that was becoming lazy "I’ve been through the mill, ground, and bolted, and come out a regular-built down-east johnny-cake, good when it’s hot, but when it’s cold, sour and indigestible;–and you’ll find me so!”

"(He) Who wishes to give himself an abundance of expense let him equip these two things: a yacht and a woman. For nothing involves more expense, if you have begun to fit them out. Nor are these two things ever sufficiently adorned, nor is any excess of adornment enough for them". - Titus Maccius Plautus (c. 254 BC - 184 BC)

I really don't know why it is that all of us are so committed to the sea, except I think it's because in addition to the fact that the sea changes, and the light changes, and ships change, it's because we all came from the sea. And it is an interesting biological fact that all of us have in our veins the exact same percentage of salt in our blood that exists in the ocean, and, therefore, we have salt in our blood, in our sweat, in our tears. We are tied to the ocean. And when we go back to the sea - whether it is to sail or to watch it - we are going back from whence we came.Remarks at the Dinner for the America's Cup Crews, 14 September 1962 John F. Kennedy |
