I know JimH follows "The Deadliest Catch", well those guys are scrambling for shelter now: UPDATE: Edge of explosive storm arrives at Alaska's Aleutian Islands Sustained winds of 70 mph (110 kph) and gusts up to 96 mph (154 kph) were recorded Friday morning on Shemya Island, where 120 people are waiting out the storm at the end of the island chain. What's left of Typhoon Nuri is also expected to bring unseasonably frigid temperatures to much of the U.S. next week. Shemya Island is where the U.S. military operates Eareckson Air Station, which serves mainly as an early warning radar installation. Acting manager Don Llewellyn says no one is going outside, but people can see light poles waving. National Weather Service forecaster Bob Oravec says the storm is expected to surpass the intensity of 2012's Superstorm Sandy. But Nuri's target is a sparsely populated region where people are accustomed to severe weather. Typhoon Nuri could bring 100 foot high waves to Alaska One of the 'Deadliest Catch' captains Sig Hansen is currently at sea, preparing for the massive storm, "So I'm playing Russian roulette here and same time we're worried that this thing is gonna change directions and come at us. And then what do you do? And so we are fearful because we do want to get in." Nuri could bring bring unseasonably frigid temperatures across the U-S next week. ABC's Senior Meteorologist Rob Maricano says, "Typhoon Nuri is one of the strongest storms on the planet this year. It's going to transform into a north Pacific storm and then get even stronger. It could become one of the strongest storms on record here in the Bering Sea, with the rapid intensification. One thing's for sure. There's big time waves with this, on average, 50 footers. We could see up to 80, 90, even 100 feet. The winds and the waves will subside, but not 'till the end of the weekend." |

Can't wait until Monday. NWS: ...HURRICANE FORCE WIND WARNING TONIGHT... Tonight SW wind 70 kt. Seas 44 ft bering side...48 ft pacific side. Patchy fog. Rain showers. FYI, 925mb is 27.30". "Only a few hundred people "impacted" in the storm that covers roughly twice the size of Texas (equals one Alaska). |

Perfect fishing weather! Wow that's pretty scary wild stuff. I'm assuming this storm would impact the avIation side up in Alsaka as well. How Sig Hansen can sleep at night is behond me. |

I searched on one of the popular AIS tracking websites for the position of the F/V NORTHWESTERN, but it is presently out of range of land-based AIS receivers. One website has its position from satellite AIS receivers, but it costs a small fortune to be able to access that data. AIS did show a lot of boats in Dutch Harbor. I never saw wind bars with five flags on them before! |

Still no data from AIS on the NORTHWESTERN: |

From what I've read, the storm set a new low for pressure in the area. 924 mb (27.25") on the barometer. Old record of 925 mb set in Dutch Harbor in 1977. For comparison, Hurricane Sandy had a low of 945 mb (27.91") and the Hurricane of 1938 (The Long Island Express, the Great New England Hurricane, and the hurricane that hit where I'm sitting right now - Mattituck, Long Island) 940 mb (27.76"). Lowest I went with +7 years of sea duty in Alaska was 954mb (28.17"). Checking many barometers, many only go down to 29.00". JimP |

I served a year on Shemya Island in 1964. We called it "The Island of the 90 MPH Fog".... |

skred - I only enjoyed a night on Shemya, stopped off in a C-130 in 1993. Had just spent the week on Attu at the USCG LORAN station. |

This is a nice wrap-up video on the after effects of this storm after it left the Bering Sea. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WyUXj0JvgtE&index=1& list=PL00u99IRraJtn38lgAequUjcZR_uFnkdY |

About 3 mins 30 seconds in he mentioned these drastic drops in temperatures are not good for the human body. I would agree its also not very kind on the heating bill either. I got this crazy bad sinus infection due to air being so cold and dry outside and the forced heat from the furnace making the humidity so low inside the house. |
