  Outrage 17 I vs 17 II

I am looking at two 17 Outrages one is a I and the other is a II. What are the differences between these two models and if all things were generally equal is there a serious preference for one over the other? All opinions very much appreciated.

The Post Classic 17 Outrage II is a much bigger boat than the 17 Outrage I due to it's very high gunwales and it also has tons more storage throughout the hull as well. With it's extra size and weight, the Outrage 17 II does provide a better ride in the rough conditions and actually rides as good if not better than the classic 18 Outrages.
All that said the 17 Outrage I has all the Classic Bob Dougherty Designed hull lines people look for and want. Because of this, I personally think it is a much better looking design than the post classic 17 Outrage II. And those classic lines mean it will be more sought after over the long term keeping the resale values high.

Large weight difference, dry listed around 1020 vs 1700lbs.

I have owned both of them No comparison in my mind / 96-99 outrage II is much,much better boat and one of most beautiful whalers ever designed.If you have a chance to ride them both that would be great. 17 Outrage II is superior boat . Classic line of Dougherty design dont impress me much if my bones hurt after good day of fishing . Again I have owned them both so I know the difference

I owned a Outrage 17 I (as well as a Montauk).
I look at the 1st design generation as a Montauk on Outrage steroids.
The Outrage 17 II has a similar name but has completely different characteristics.
If it were me, I would go with the Outrage 17 II. It is all around a better boat.
I would pick a Outrage 17 I over a Montauk.

I know the owner is asking for opinions about Outrage 17 I v. II, but to continue on Phil's comments, which are spot on, I would also pick an Outrage 18 over an Outrage 17 II: being both rated for 150hp, the Outrage 18 has more deck space, a bigger fuel tank and weighs 450lbs less, not to mention the nice teak touch.
It all comes down to how big a boat you want or need.

I agree with the previous post's comments.
"It all comes down to how big a boat you want". I don't own either of these boats, but I have been on both of these 17s, more so on the earlier version with a friend
The later generation is bigger , the newer look and actually takes styling cues from the 20 and 21 Outrage of that era of which I currently own a 20 Outrage.
I really like some things about the first generation Outrage 17 which has that classic running surface look that has been lost. Its is smaller, seemed to get on plane quicker and needs less horsepower to do it. It also trimmed out well while underway. I also like that built in, above the surface livewell between the rear quarter seats and in front of the engine.
I have owned a classic 18 and currently a late 90s era 20 Outrage. The classic 18 had no easily accessable livewell and the fish boxes on my current 20 Outrage are difficult to access with people on board standing around on them. That livewell/fishbox on the 17I seems to be the handy solution in a small boat like these. Sometimes smaller is better and in this case I think it is if you are using it for lake and local bay use vs. big open water.
For storage, the first generation fits into a garage with the lower center console while the second generation is a tighter fit with the higher profile. If storing it in a garage in the winter is important, that may be a factor
If I could find a clean nice one of these I would buy it.
As I remember the newer Outrage model was aided by a dole fin to aid it and also seemed transom heavy and tended to propose easily. Owners of that model may offer further comments on the handling characteristics of the later model

I've had all three models, the Montauk, a 1991 17' Outrage and a 1999 17' Outrage II. Your choice should really be predicated on what your needs are. While the 17' Outrage II will give you the smoother ride, allow you to install items such as a T-top, it does require more power and in the long run, cost more to operate. My 1991 17' Outrage was light and nimble. It went all the places my newer Outrage goes but was lighter to tow, needed less horsepower to get up and go but wasn't really practical to install a T-top (because of it's light weight.) Mind did have that sweet fish box in the back, although I was never able to put much of a dent in it.
My advice, given the choice between the two, I'd go with the newer Outrage but I wouldn't discount a nicely equipped 17' Outrage I. Either way, you can't go wrong!
