What is the most sought after classic whaler up to 17 feet, and why.

Wow, loaded question.....my opinion is the classic 15 hull (I believe it was discontinued in mass production early 1990's). It is so simple to use, has a great ride in choppy water, is a blast to put down the throttle & play. The 13' gets pretty beat up in any sort of water & the Montauk is great & will probably win this award, but I've had a couple 15's & would do nothing else. My dad has a 22' Grady & uses my 15 more than anything....he can get in & out of it easy, easy to operate, with the new four stroke we put on it, burns about 2 gallons an hour, bullet proof.

The only true answer is "Which ever one makes it's owner the happiest."

Anything else is just personal opinions because there is no quantifiable data to clearly support any claim.

Regardless, as perfect as possible to OEM condition is likely the greatest single factor for making a Whaler "Sought After".

But the ones that sell the fastest could be construed as the most "Sought After", as well I suppose. Usually those are the Whalers that are listed for sale below Market Value for it's given Condition.....even if it's in fair condition.

You must first ansk yourself this question.
When you are cruising along in a light chop do you want to be seated or standing up?
The 15' Boston Whaler has the superior ride and will not trash your kidneys when you are seated.
The 16'7" Montauk offers a more stable platform with a higher freeboard. The trade off is that you must be standing with your knees slightly bent to act as schock absorbers when underway.
They are both excellent unsinkable legends.

I would say the 15 center console. It was only produced for a few years and people have often spent a lot of time and money replicating them on a standard 15.

The most sought after Boston Whaler boat--in my opinion--is the 345 CONQUEST. Many people are seeking this boat, but they cannot afford it.

Touche Jim, I want a 33' Grady but it happens to be the same value as the equity in my house....my 15 is the CC model & I removed the bench seating & installed two pedestal seats. Easy option if anyone wants the process...I have photos as well, email me if interested.

I always liked the early-mid 1990's, for example, 1995 Outrage 17.

I like George's opinion.
I've been working on my 15 footer, off and on for the past couple of years, and am hoping I am going to wind up with the ultimate 15' center console when I'm finished in a few weeks. This one is really outside the box. It will be a new experience for me as I have never even been in a 15 footer.
I chose to restore and renovate a 15 foot Whaler, becuase I'm a bit tired of 13 footers, the 16/17 footer seems abit boring, and at my age, bigger boats are out of the question.
A 21' Outrage would be a great project if I was younger.

Classic Montauk is one of the most popular boats ever made, hard to argue against it. I like the 15, but they are somewhat rare and therefore, hard to say they are the "most sought after". If they had been more popular, more of them would have been sold and still be around. Maybe among Whaler aficionados, the 15 is highly sought after, but I don't think it would be the most sought after overall.

I'd probably go with the Montauk. Of the classic Whalers, it is probably the most versatile and recognized of them all.

The most sought after for what purpose? That is the question. I have a pretty ideal fishing boat which is also a good cruising boat for two which is all I require. It's a modern 190 Montauk.

I also have a small Sport 13 for small water cruising for two and for skinny water fishing. Frankly, I also enjoy it for "showing off". People at the ramp, gas station, rest stop, etc. always want to look it over and admire it. They love the mahogany and the size. The boat is an unrestored 1981 with a four stroke Mercury. It's a little rough but still people seem to love it, including me. I have no interest in any larger boats at this time.

I've seen a very beautifully restored Super Sport. I'm not sure but believe it was a sixteen center console. It virtually reeked of mahogany is was one of the most attractive boats I've seen other than the grand old mahogany hulled boats of yesteryear and the modern Rivas I admired in Italy.

I'm happy with my small fleet and don't want another boat. I plan to get a new interior next year from Mike and to get busy making the 13 a little more "perfect".

I may be not expert in english terminology, but "most sought after" refer to large-scale numbers and, clearly, you're looking to buy a single boat.

So, it's either one of these two situations: if you're looking for a boat for yourself, get the model that best suit your needs, whatever it is and, to the opposite, if you plan to flip one in hope to make some cash, get a Montauk.

Probably the 17 I would imagine, but the most sought after in history is the next model up and that is the 18 or 19 Classic Outrage.

A lot of you mention the 15' Center Console. Are those a lot different than my modern 15' Montauk??

The big difference between a modern 150 Montauk and a classic 15 Center Console (or any classic 15 model) is weight and power.
A new 150 Montauk weighs 950# and is rated for a 60 HP engine.
A classic 15 weighs 580# and is rated for 70 HP.
A classic 15 is a blast to drive - like a sports car on the water. Power to weight ratio is near perfect.

Quote from the Whaler Dictionary:"Most sought after=Classic Whalers that people want. Not sought after=Classic Whalers people don't want."

With your definition of "sought after" being anchored in desire and resale, the 15 sport, and center console sports are sought after and bring great prices for the seller. Also, the classic Smirked Montauk (1976 on) is the iconic Whaler most people have in their mind and is the bread and butter money maker for sellers. A good Montauk will sell faster than a larger Outrage or Revenge and at times bring a higher selling price.

Is it easier to sell a classic 15 footer or a classic Montauk with no power or the same boat with an older outboard when the asking price for the outboard is added on.

So all I need to do is put a 90-115 HP light 2-stroke on my heavy newer 15 and get the similar power to weight ratio as the old 15 to turn it into a sports car on water. I'll leave that to my sons after my boat is 20 plus years old to try. 34 mph is fast enough for me and she turns and handles nice under most conditions with 2 people.

I think the most sought after whaler would be the make and model least sold

The most sought after Whaler is one that is a foot or two larger than the one you currently own ... : )

Jim, the 345 Conquest is not a Classic Whaler.

I would argue that the 17' Montauk is the most desired classic whalers whalers up to 17'. It has among the highest resale value and one of the higher production totals.

^^ This.

The original Nauset and its later replacement the classic-era Montauk are the boats that define "Boston Whaler". Everything else within the classic BW family are compared to these two benchmarks, some favorably and some less so. But these are the standards of comparison.
