I recently restored a 1991 Outrage 17. Always loved this boat but preferred it with the classic console. The ride of an Outrage with the the smaller Montauk size. Love the front seating, stern seating and live well - all not typical on classic Outrages!

Here is the URL to the before and after photos:

Looks great!

Why did you replace the OEM Outrage Console with a Montauk Console? It sure make is look like an 18 Outrage to the untrained eye...

What did you do the OEM console?

Jeff, I swapped out the taller console with the classic Montauk/Outrage console because I wanted to keep the classic look. The taller console is more practical but I personally felt the classic console was better looking. Whaler fabricated me a brand new console this year so other than the hull and engine, everything else is brand new.

Thanks Whaler710! Something I wanted to do for many years. Certainly makes it a unique boat.

Great looking boat. The wood RPS seatback is also a nice addition.

The gallery now has four images. I think I was confused about the before and after pictures. Now I get it--the "after" boat has the lower console and FL registration numbers.

Juallius has created a hybrid boat, an OUTRAGE 17 that is more like an OUTRAGE 18.

What is the color of the hull gel coat? In the "before" picture it looked white, but in the "after" pictures it looks more like Desert Tan.

I just noticed you have a 130 on it. It must fly!

The color is desert tan. Looked white in the before picture because it was so "chalky". I wet sanded the hull to get the original shine back. Re-gel coated the bottom after doing some minor fiberglass repair. It came with a 130 on it. Max rated for a 120 and got the boat up to 50 mph with low fuel and trimmed up. Fast enough for me!

I wasn't sure what to expect when I clicked on the photograph link. I must say I like the look! I'll keep the taller console on my 1991 17' Outrage I for the extra storage and electronics compartment But yours really captures that classic look that I love. Well done.

That big console is awesome regarding utility, space and big wind block if windy cold conditions are ever an issue. I don't really like the the look as much as the lower, classic console. Seat position in my 95, assuming same as yours, kinda sucks too - so I sit on a flat, rectangular fender gets my high and closer to the console. Best

Please don't use the word "restore".

You have removed the OEM console and RPS. That is a customization or modification.

Misspoke- I really like the looks of my Outrage 17 with the big console. However, I think the same boat with the smaller "classic" console looks terrific. Not necessarily better. All that said, I'll take the extra space any day.

Wow! That console looks great on that 17. This and the other favorable comments you have been receiving help to illustrate the importance of aesthetics in good design. I wonder what the original designers of that boat would think of its new look?

PhilT, good point. However, I spent hours and hours "restoring" most of the boat (wet sanding, fiberglass work, etc.). Modified by replacing the older console with a new OEM classic console and did the same with part of the bench seat. So it's accurate to say that it was a restoration but also modification and replacement - something I believe all of us on this site can appreciate.
