I just bought a 2008 Montauk and would like to ask for opinions on adding an additional gauge.

The console has a Tach, Volts, and Water pressure gauges. in the final spot I was thinking of having a dedicated hour meter added. Good idea or should I be considering something else for the last gauage spot.

Also I will utilize "smartcraft" - as soon as I can deterimine a favored head unit like Northstar or otehr.

Any thoughts would be appreciated.

Thanks

How about a tilt/trim gauge? I added one and use it as a reference on a regular basis.

An hour meter isn't something that needs to be viewed at the helm. Put it inside the console.

Good thought. I suppose I could mount the hour meter inside the console.

I believe the Northstar / smartcraft has a tilt / trim . . . but no idea how convenient it is to view on the screen .

Thanks

Pilot,
Should you go to Smartcraft, all the functions you have described will be in one gauge, your tach, except for speedo. What exactly are you looking for? We do Smartcraft installs (single) with 2 gauges, Tach and Speedo. All info is available on each through their digital data screens. Let me know, I can probably get you a damn good price on 2 gauges. Seabob4 - Thanks

I'm definitley interested in Smartcraft and was intending on using that capability. I'm interested all the info. I can get out of the smartcraft - and doing it all upfront to be as efficient as possible.

The Montauk 170 console space is limited - so I'm still trying to fiqure out the best way to display all of the information. I do like the the dual gauges I've seen.

The dealer is recommending I connect the Smartcraft to the NorthStar chartplotter / sounder. I just don't know alot about Northstar. (more comfortable with Garmin)

Do you have any experience with connecting smartcraft to Chartplotters / sounder combos?

I'm starting to think the Speedo / Tach gauges with a separate plotter might make sense if it can be tied in.

Thanks for the information . . . and might be interested in the gauges. E-Mail is rkmcmanus@mindspring.com

Further to Pilot's question, will the Smartcraft System Tach fit in the same hole as the existing Tach? This would allow the replacement of the existing Tach with any new holes, allowing for display of all information other than Speed.

Mike,
That IS a good point you bring up. But rest easy, Smartcrafts are the same 4" as all the other existing gauges out there. Sometimes Mercury actually thinks for a change! Pilot, you will have mail shortly.

I like having an hour meter in sight. Reminds me every time that I don't use it enough.
