I am looking at a 17' Whaler with the model name of Sportsman. It's a dual console set-up with sit-down, not pedestal, seating. Interior is all fiberglass with several hatches and lockers. Motor is a '97 Evinrude 90, includes trailer and covers. It has bottom paint. Can someone give me an estimate of its value, assuming the motor runs decently? Thanks.

Not a Whaler if it has a dual console and storage lockers. Are you sure it is not a GLS. Sportsman sounds like a McKee.

Agreed. This is an incorrectly identified boat - if it is a "Sportsman" model, it is not a Whaler. If it is a Whaler, then it is not a "Sportsman" model.

Is it possible that "Sportsman" is the name of the boat, or something else?

The best way to verify this is to look at the HIN tag. It will start "BWC" if it is a Whaler.

Thanks. I'll check it out tomorrow and try to be a bit clearer on what I'm looking at.

Great. If you can, get some photos. Specific places to look for signs of wear include drain tubes, around cleats and rail stanchions and the deck. See the reference section of this site for a "buying guide" for Whalers - that will help you even if the boat is not a Whaler.

That information will help us put a ballpark value on the vessel in question.

What is the seller asking?

Here is a link to an inspection document I wrote. Click on the link to download it. This should help.

Could we be talking about a Super Sport Ltd like this?

Yes, the last photo looks like the right one. I'll get a better look at it tomorrow but this photo matches the photos I've seen of the boat I'll see in person tomorrow. So it's a Super Sport Limited. Any idea of what it be worth assuming it's in good shape? Thanks very much for all your help!

I didn't mention before that the guy selling it is asking $5000. What do you think?

With a motor and is it running with good compression? Trailer? What else? Besure to verify the boat is a Whaler before your purchase. There are many clones out there. Look for a correct HIN number as well as or, Stencil Number.

Check out the motor carefully. compression an lower unit...thats half the value. Premiun 17s were Montauks, Newtauks and rarest and likely best of all, SS'tauks with montauk console and SS rails...only seen a couple. SS ltd was a nice but not as popuular a model. If the motor and hull check out, its likely worth 5K. Its a Whaler!

If the motor checks out and the hull has "normal" wear 5k sounds very good. It looks like a great set up for towing, cruising and beaching. I am sure it will be a real head turner. Good luck!
