I thought I had found another solution, but it didn't work out. I need two new 'lips' or tops (I think they may be some sort of rubber or plastic) for OE RPS rodholders. Anybody got a couple for sale? Black or white...makes no difference to me.

The closest thing I've found for a replacement white top rod holder is a White Cap (appropriate brand name) Blue Water Series part number S-7003CBLUE. It is a stainless steel rod holder with white vinyl top (just remove the clamp brackets to use in a RPS - requires some blocking on the bottom). Measures 10 3/4" long by 1 7/8 OD. Never tried it, buy you may be able to remove the white vinyl, trim and fit to your existing unit. Or maybe White Cap would sell you just the white vinyl.

Have also seen the standard flared top white plastic rod holders used in a Montauk RPS - looked surprisingly good.

Another thought.
For a black unit try a hard plastic oar collar.
A Scotty (part number 101BLK) Oar Collar fits perfectly in the RPS rod holder holes and looks sharp. Just need to make an extension for the bottom part to fasten.

Thanks for those good ideas, frontier. I already went a similar way on the advice of Tom Clark, and this morning ordered a couple of these for less than ten bucks a piece:

Perko Complete Liner W/Lip & Tube PKO-0483DP1BLK

I think that black lips, like the ones I had on my Outrage 18's RPS rod holders, are non-OE, but frankly I think they look better and hold up better as well. Heresy, I know ;-)

What is wrong with just leaving them naked?

I thought about that, Nick, especially after I cut off the old raggedy lips and cleaned up the rod holders (perfect condition after 27 years). They look nice and shine right up, with slightly fluted tops, but I'm concerned that their edges would be too sharp without lips. Tom actually suggested just wrapping some electricians' tape around the tops of the rod holders and leaving them be, but for ten bucks each I couldn't resist seeing whether those Perkos would work out.

I don't think they will. I think they are too big from what I remember reading over the years. I doubt they are too sharp and a file or dremel could remedy that.

Hey Tony,

These are 1 3/4" ID with the lip ring (Sounds Dirty)to fit over a tube/rod holder.

If you think they will work, they are yours.

Let me know

They look perfect, but hang onto them for now, and thanks! Perko's already got my big bucks and the parts are being shipped as we speak, so we'll see what happens whith them. How did you get ahold of those, BTW?

What I really lust after is that set of outrigger mounts you're advertising here, Andy. Way cool and the price is sure good, but I can't justify buying them because I doubt I'd ever use them on my Montauk. They'd sure pimp her up nice, however ;-)

OK Tony,

No worries. I will hang on to them in case your others do not work out. They are yours for the taking.

The outriggers are sweet, but just too much going on for me and the boat. I have enough trouble using one or two rods ;-)

Mine could use renewal, too. I've considered trying the liquid vinyl used to coat tool handles. Has anyone tried that?

You can get inserts for Whaler RPS tubes from

http://www.shopatron.com/products/category/101.2.571.570.0.0.0

or you can buy a complete Burmese Teak backrest including rod holders and grab handles from me (hint-hint) :)

Best of luck

Hey, don't think I haven't been resisting your hint to the best of my ability, Hunch, ever since I saw photos of your new RPS backs. Beautiful work. I'm in the process of doing a little spring cleaning and oiling to the teak on my 1982 Montauk, and the 27-year-old RPS is a challenge to my barely-basic woodworking skills, that's for sure. But still, there's something very nice indeed about achieving even modest improvements on that fine old chunk of OE Whaler wood, and frankly unless I win the lottery, with two kids in college there's no way I can justify spending even the more-than-reasonable amount you're asking to replace my old, battered RPS at this time.

Thanks for the lead to the rod holder tips.

If they are all apart Tony sand the snot out of them and then a few coats of oil...will look like new.
