Have been looking for a quality Montauk 17 for a while. Found 2 that were unadvertised at a respected former Boston Whaler well known to many on this blog and in the North East. One was a 95 and was his best friend's trade in, very good looking with an Evinrude 90hp Oceanpro, but a bit pricey with a lot of electronics and options that I probably don't need. The other is the dealer's personal boat for the past 20 years, an 86 with a 70hp Johnson of about the same age. Also in very good shape for it's age and the engine still runs well, but it is 25 years old. If the trade-in doesn't sell, the dealer might keep it for himself because of the upgrades, and sell his '86. Any recommendations on what it might be worth?

We have an unlisted 87 17' Montauk (87 Evinrude 90 HP, 2000 Caulkins Trailer) for sale on Long Island. If you are interested, we could send you some info or you could come take a look. Rick

Probably more to the owner than any prospective buyer, since he's apparently not trying to sell it.

What is this about "unadvertised" or "unlisted" boats? Are they especially desirable, and should I therefore be seeking them out?

We just decided to sell our 17' 87 Montauk and haven't had time to list it. Our large family has outgrown it...great boat though! We are asking for $8500 or BRO. If you would like pics and more info leave your email address and I can send out a flyer. Rick (Long Island, NY)

Nothing special about unlisted or unadvertised boats, but if the current owner is content keeping and using it and putting his own family on board, particularly if it's a whaler dealer, it might have fewer flaws then a boat that someone is trying to unload.

I sold a pristine '84 Montauk w/ fairly new trailer about three years ago (90 HP 'Tower of Power' Merc w/6hp newer Merc kicker) for $10,000 in Wisconsin (asking $10,500). In today's market I don't think I could get $8,500 for the same boat.
