Greetings and thanks for an interesting website. recently inherited what I believe is a Tashmoo whaler. After scraping loose layers of bottom paint applying new paint and scrubbing the previously overpainted top side and recoating with quality products , rewiring lights etc. Finally get ready for a sea trial and you have to know what happens next fire up the motor and rapraprap it is toast!
Any value out there as a hull only or should I repower and keep it for a fresh water bass boat? thanks marty

Whalers hold there value better than most boats. Painting over the topside gelcoat certainly reduces it's value.Someone would want it even without an engine. Pictures would help a great deal in getting a general idea of what it's worth.

You certainly are at a crossroads. Repowered boats almost never sell for what they're really worth (that is to say, what the owner has invested). Therefore, repowering is truly an investment in TIME and ENJOYMENT - so if you're going to hold onto the boat for a good long time, go ahead and repower and enjoy the boat for a long time.

If not, you may find a well used 2-stroke to slap on the transom so you can sell a "turnkey" rig that's ready to run.

If it were me, I'd first answer the question - do I want to keep this boat for a long time?

Been there, done that - sold my recently repowered 18' Outrage for what I needed, but a significant discount vs. my financial investment.

...which is why I'm in no hurry to repower my current rig with new motors, despite my desire for new E-TECs.

A prime example is on this same page - there is a boat listed in the Marketplace that has twin 250 E-TEC engines - about $30K invested in the engines alone. Add electronics, etc, and you're getting a 27' Whaler bare hull for around 5,000 - 8,000 dollars.

That, my friends, is a steal for the buyer, and a crying shame for the seller - but it's reality.

You can't beat free - especially if it's a Whaler that's still floating. You can probably pick up a used 70 HP motor for less than $3,000...which is what that rig (the hull and motor) would sell for on the used market (maybe a little more, depending on your location and the appearance of the boat...and of course, the time of year).

Do as Buckda says or look for a nice used engine that you can actually hear run or better yet sea trial. A decent used engine can be found for under $2k then depending on condition you might have a $4-5000 boat where now you are probably looking at $2k max unless really nice.

Don't forget your compression tester.
