This boat will likely not appeal to most here because of its location (Nova Scotia, Canada), but I thought I'd post it here anyway. You never know. It's a very original and well optioned '99 Montauk with an '06 Evinrude E-tec 90hp and '09 Karavan galvanized trailer. Here's the ad if you're interested: http:/ / halifax. kijiji. ca/ c-cars-vehicles-boats-watercraft-powerboat s-motorboats-1999-Boston-Whaler-Montauk-17-W0QQAdIdZ312092604
The boat is in great shape and the current owner likes it very much, but wants something larger for 2012 (Outrage 17, 18/19, Mako 17-19, Eastern 18, etc).

I thought Eastern went bust years ago. Friend had a 21' cuddy, lobster boat, in the Cape. Semi displacement w/keel and flew with a single 90. I have seen ONE in FL, neat boats.

Nope, Eastern is alive and well: http://www.easternboats.com/ A shop I worked at a few years ago was the only dealer in Atlantic Canada. We had an 18' and 22' cuddy at the time. I liked the 18', but found the 22' a little rough and noisy (115 E-tec on the stern). Maybe it just needed a quieter motor.
The Eastern 18' is quite a bit different then a Montauk, but I told the owner of this Montauk that it might not be much of an upgrade. I'm trying to lean him toward a nice classic Outrage 17-19. We'll see, have to sell the Montauk first.

I guess it was the 22' Lobsterman. Neat boat and very efficient. It was noisy as well due to the noise gets trapped in the enclosure I think. Wish it had a stern bulhead as well. Any stern seas would come right into the cockpit and back out the scuppers, no biggie but wet.

That Eastern 18 center console looks pretty sweet. I guess it must be a pretty efficient hull, like a panga, if they are recommending 50 - 70 hp.

The new 22 Eastern is sharp. I think its in the mid 40's with trailer and power.

Sorry to hijack your thread but we just eliminated the Mako for your buddy as an option. Comes down to Whaler vs Eastern....keep us posted.

Haha, you guys are liking the Easterns! I like them as well and did enjoy driving the 18'. It is an efficient hull and would move just fine with 50-70hp unless you were carrying heavy loads or something. The one we had just seemed somewhat overpowered with a 90hp on it. I did find the stern a little narrow and a splash well would be nice as Tohsgib said. The rounded chines help to make the 18' efficient, but in turn it really doesn't want to go over ~30mph.
I have two guys pretty interested in the Montauk already so it may sell soon. It's one of the nicest classic Montauks I look after and is worth the money. I'll be sad to see it go if I don't get it back for service, etc. I agree with the Whaler vs. Eastern (and maybe Seaway). I think the older Makos are interesting, but the good ones are at an age now that they likely need a lot of work (did some extensive work to a '76 Mako 17' recently). We'll see...
