Do you think this boat is a real 15 foot Whaler

It is a real "piece of junk", that used to be a Whaler.

It's a Whaler..It's a project..but, it's not beyond repair (at a cost).

Is there a hole in the bottom? Is there a structural issue?
poker13 posted 10-31-2011 01:29 PM ET (US)     Profile for poker13
It may or may not be. It's hard to tell with all that crud they smeared all over the hull.

Real...nobody I know ever splashed a 15'. Plenty of 13 & 17 splashes. Looks like the ever popular Carribean Whaler that sits on a mooring and just gets abused. Right colors too. 1981 Rude is probably junk.

It's real but what a sad fate for one of Boston Whaler's best designs.

No...it probably runs and handles just fine, just looks like shit.

It's definitely a 15 Whaler!

Interesting; not long ago I [finally] sold a similar 17' whaler with trailer and title on ebay,,,,brought a mere ~$1250,,,seems like a pretty challenged economic market right now, even for whalers. I say finally, as I advertised it awhile, and advertised it here too...

I just saw a similar condition 13...(not a 15, big difference)... with power sell on a Utility's auction site for around $1100...lots of bids, but surprised it went so cheap. A sign of thye times, perhaps.

Tohsgib posted 11-01-2011 10:12 AM ET (US)     Profile for Tohsgib  Send Email to Tohsgib
Not really...I saw a mint classic 13 go for almost $8k recently on E-Bay. Maybe the people WITH money are not looking for junk. The people WITHOUT money can only buy cheap junk. My "sign of the times" is get off your lazy but and go to work. Then again why should they if the Gov is paying for them to sit at home and buy junk on internet auction sites.
Binkster posted 11-01-2011 11:42 AM ET (US)     Profile for Binkster  Send Email to Binkster
I think I can find a decent 15' Whaler without power that also has decent repairable gelcoat with a beat up or no interior for 2k.
poker13 posted 11-01-2011 12:17 PM ET (US)     Profile for poker13
Then again, you see lots of ads for overpriced classic 15s. Almost every old 15 I've run across in the last few months is at least $6,000 to $7,000 with an old engine.

Anything can be fixed (especially fiberglass), its a matter of how much time and money you want to spend on the project (this boat needs everything, even the trailer needs a going through). The boat is about 70 miles from me. I would have to take a ride to look before the purchase, I would want to see if the hull is not waterlogged, This would be my biggest concern.
maverick posted 11-01-2011 06:05 PM ET (US)     Profile for maverick  Send Email to maverick
Agree, Contender on the waterlogged... Looks to have potential at least as a workboat. Wonder how high it will go? 15s seem to have a very loyal following.

Binkster - $2k for a 15 in the Tampa area? Is that a normal price for a 15 in your area?

contender sez; [I would want to see if the hull is not waterlogged, This would be my biggest concern.]

I agree, and I would have to travel over 200 miles each way to check it out. Thing is, how can you tell if its waterlogged with the hull covered with cheap paint, and an outboard on the stern. Unlike a 13 footer this boat would be too heavy to attempt to lift it. I e-mailed the guy and asked him if there are any soft spots on the deck and he said no. I would have to see this boat in person, and its too far.

Bink: Do not be turned off by distance, When I purchased my 16'7" I drove from Islamorada to Tampa to purchase the boat (about 380 miles one way) When I purchased my 11 whaler it was in Eustis Fla from Ft Lauderdale (250-275 miles one way). Sometimes it is worth the trip. If it is what you are looking for I would not pass it up, you never know...I would rather take the trip and see (if it is or not) a piece of crap than be wondering if I should have gone...

Rich, were they basket cases like this boat?
contender posted 11-01-2011 10:22 PM ET (US)     Profile for contender  Send Email to contender
The 11 (1978) was in bad shape needed a lot of work, (got it in a trade, basically just cost me the fuel to go and get it) I just redid it, finished it in July, it was a bare hull when I got it, there was a hole in the bottom of the boat (about 8 inches long right on the keel (boat was maybe dropped?) had to dig out some of the foam and redo the keel) had to fill in the hole, However, the rest of the hull was dry, the boat look liked it was painted with sears best latex inside and out I had to sand, sand, and sand a little more, and then do all the prep work, Then did a repaint with awl-grip on the entire hull (Fighting Lady Yellow Hull and an Eggshell Interior). I sanded down all the non skid as well and re-shot my own. I even raised the transom one inch. Gave it a 25 Yamaha 2 stroke, with teleflex steering and a custom fuel alum. tank (10.5 gallons) and a new trailer. The 16'7" (1975) was only about 6-8 months old when I purchased it used back in 1975, so it was in real good shape. Got deals on both of them never though twice about driving the distance.
Tohsgib posted 11-02-2011 11:06 AM ET (US)     Profile for Tohsgib  Send Email to Tohsgib
I drove almost 600 miles EACH way to get my Donzi sight unseen.

Mav...$2k is not the avergae price but it has been done and in much better shape than that. I think Len sold his 15 Barehull for around that a couple years ago, great shape, new rubrail, etc.

PS...I see bare holes in the trason and the guy painted over the friggin lifting eyes. Boat is probably worth the $500 asking, maybe $700 max.
maverick posted 11-02-2011 05:59 PM ET (US)     Profile for maverick  Send Email to maverick
Painted over which lifting eyes?

Has its 1st bid.

This boat can be had for $300-500, just bring the cash to show him, leave your phone number and walk away, not going to have a lot of people knocking down his door for this one, christmas is around the corner he could need the cash...
Binkster posted 11-02-2011 09:16 PM ET (US)     Profile for Binkster  Send Email to Binkster
well, I won`t bid on this one, I`ll find one that has decent gelcoat that can be restored. I've AwlGripped numerous boats in the past 35 years, and the amount of labor involved sometimes isn't worth it on a small boat. Plus the material has gotten very expensive, and I've gotten lazy I guess, and I have other boat projects I want to do.
Tohsgib posted 11-03-2011 08:38 AM ET (US)     Profile for Tohsgib  Send Email to Tohsgib
Nobody asked you to buy it Binks.

Contender, look at the transom pics. The rear crome lifting eyes are half painted, could have at least used some tape even though they unscrew easier. This also leads me to believe the boat was painted by brush...sweet!

contender posted 11-03-2011 07:29 PM ET (US)     Profile for contender  Send Email to contender
Good eye, the outside eye is upside down as well and he gave the bow eye a coat of paint as well (maybe a roller?), this guy spared no expense, still could be a gem in the rough. This boat needs a total redo, check out the winch stand...bent...The only thing I would be concern if it is water logged, if it is... it would make a lovely tomato garden or a mosquito pond...Take care...

What is with the stern light coming out of the engine cowl?

You guys are HIGH if you think the boat isn't worth $500.
Unless it's dripping . . buy it !!!
maverick posted 11-04-2011 10:17 AM ET (US)     Profile for maverick  Send Email to maverick
At the current $500 price, an important issue is if it's waterlogged.

If one was looking to pay $5000, then small things would tend to become more significant.

Binkster posted 11-04-2011 10:23 PM ET (US)     Profile for Binkster  Send Email to Binkster
Maverick, I agree with you. With everything covered up with that paint job and a non running motor sitting on the stern, there is no way of knowing if its waterlogged. The owner said the floor is not soft. Well, that could be checked out, but it could still be waterlogged. I could buy alot of tomatoes for $500. I have enough boats in my yard right now, I don't need a "planter" boat.
contender posted 11-05-2011 05:06 PM ET (US)     Profile for contender  Send Email to contender
poochietwo: This is where I have installed my stern light except I have no pole at all, no pole to get in the way, no exposed electric connection to corrode, no wire mess. My boat is an older whaler (1975) I understand that it does not fall under the height requirement for a rear light(stern), however, there is no rule/regulation that you can not mount your stern light on the/your cowling. South Fla. is very big on flats boats for the back country, (the is water 6 ft and less) this is where a lot of boat riggers place the stern light on flats boats. Or if a polling platform is used it is mounted on it...

Was two bids, now back to one bid. One of the bidders might have looked the boat over, and withdrew his bid.
The saga of the cheap 15 footer continues.

Well, there is not much else interesting going on here right now.

maverick posted 11-06-2011 05:41 PM ET (US)     Profile for maverick  Send Email to maverick
Back to 2 bids...(:>

Oh come on now, you KNOW you want to bid heh heh, but somehow I don't think it'll be going too cheaply even with the paint on the lift rings. (;)

Ugly or not, waterlogged or not, it is still a 15 and sometimes the greed that it could be a killer good deal steps in and makes us press that bid button.

Your turn!

1875 hits/views, not bad.

4 bids and a flying $520....whooooaaa maybe $600. I hope not.
maverick posted 11-09-2011 04:40 AM ET (US)     Profile for maverick  Send Email to maverick
well, the sale ends while many are at work vs on a weekend, so that may keep the price/bidding low. I'd probably give it a dance for fun if I didn't have to drive 500 miles to pick it up - would make a decent workboat at least.

Thanks Bink - one of my many car projects over the years; it's "B-Type Speedster" with Ford 302 V8, I've had it about 4 years now.

Next project will be either a 20 or 22 Guardian with dive door...I'm looking for a project one now. Mav
