Hi all, thanks for reading. I have a 1981 Outrage 18, year one of production. Second owner and purchased in 1987. Awesome boat but has some issues, and I am trying to get a handle on what the hull might be worth to someone who wants to bring her back to her former glory. The bad and good points are:

1. Tank failure. Boat is on its second tank which has failed. Unfortunately I believe this replacement tank may not have been properly installed. The aluminum tank itself is visible behind the fuel gauge through the deck circle access, I am guessing it may not have been properly foamed or glassed in? Regardless, I believe a fair amount of water has gotten in there over the years. Not sure how much if any water intrusion there could be beyond the tank recess.
2. Hardware like the bow rail and original console are all a little loose at points.
3. Console is a little beat up, could use new access doors, etc. Plexiglass screen was replaced and is in good shape.
3. Certain the transom is still in good shape. Boat has a 130 johnson which we will be keeping. Previous engines were a 115 evinrude and a 140 evinrude.
4. Boat has been kept trailered or indoors on a rack, never stored in the water. Gelcoat is in pretty good shape. Deck finish is showing some age in certain spots. Bow locker hatch is good shape.
5. Boat has an aftermarket leaning post for the helm and full beam length rear seat, both in good shape.
6. Has a bimini top in very good condition.
7. Thruhull fittings appear to be intact, etc.
8. No trailer.

If there is any other relevant info I should provide please let me know, and thanks for any suggestions, comments and perspective!

Photos will always tell a better story of a boat's value than words. If you have photos I would post them.

Considering you can find 18's these days across most of the US in decent shape with trailers and good running power for $7500 - $9500, getting good money for your hull may be tough. Selling any whaler without power is difficult no matter what, throw in a needed tank replacement and that will greatly add to the problem.

Depending on condition, and assuming yours is in fair the hull by itself may likely only fetch $2000 - maybe $4500 in today's market. Selling in Southern Florida is a tough factor as well. There are a lot of other cheap beater project whalers that pop up in that area driving the market prices down. Also with the boat being located way down in the keys many out of state buyers may shy away do to #1 The difficultly / cost to get to it and view it in person either by themselves or have someone else inspected it #2 The cost to transport it out of there #3 The perception that a boat that has lived down in that kind of salt and HIGH UV environment may be "burned out" and covered in crazing.

Dave Buckalew sold his 18' which had a newly rebuilt floor, good tank, really nice trailer, no console, no pilot or other seats on eBay last year. It took a couple runs through the auctions before he finally got someone to bid at his reserve of $2500 which is were it finally sold I believe. That was a tough reality check of the market we have.

Many early models were recalled due to wavy sides, that would be my major concern. If not wavy...cool. W/O trailer I would think maybe $3k.

Thanks very much, this is great info and really helps me out. I'd be very interested to learn more about the wavy side issue, I did a google search and couldn't find anything, do you know where I can learn more? Thanks again!

I did just slightly better than my reserve - 2750...which I felt was a VERY good value for the buyer. He got a great hull in good condition and a stripped down console and a tandem axle galvanized trailer.

I'd go so far as to say the only boats that you can make money on would be those that are VERY sought after and rare - think 1920's - 1940's Gar-Wood, Hacker, Chris-Craft, Century, Lyman and the like...and that's only if you're very smart in how you buy and can efficiently make restorations without spending too much time and money.

The old ribside Outrages are starting to garner some attention, but the circle of buyers is significantly smaller than the other mentioned (and much older) brands.

I think that the 70's and 80's Whalers have about 30 more years, with the concurrent loss of available stock, to appreciate in value enough to make restoration and resale a viable business option on anything but a very small scale.

Also - regarding your project, I recently got a quote on tank replacement...good rule of thumb is about $15/gallon - so for that 63 gallon tank, you're looking at about $945, plus shipping, which could be pricey, just to replace that leaking tank...add about $100 for the replacement hoses and $70 for the replacement gauge/sender.

O. - Out
A. - Another
T. - Thousand

Dave - you are saying a new 140 gallon tank for a 25 is $2100? Yikes. I better be sure I keep mine filled all winter!

Yes. Which is why I am going to pressure test mine. There are no visible signs of corrosion, so I am cautiously optimistic for the moment.

The wavy side issue is not a big deal for most of them, cosmetic only

$2,100.00 for a 140 gal.tank????

Is that from these guys? http://www.floridamarinetanks.com/default.php

My understanding was that these were the guys that supplied the originals.

Is this boat being listed FOR-SALE?

If you want to have a discussion about the boat, please re-post to a discussion area.
