I'm in the market for a Montauk 190, but find very few used. The few I've seen, at reasonable prices, have bottom paint or 115 hp motors (I prefer a 150 hp). I've been watching Boat Trader, this site and Craig's List. Any suggestions on other sites to watch?

A fairly new model so I would not expect too many in the used market. imo

Try the whaler dealership in Lake George in upstate NY.. They frequently sell 190's 170's that they take out of their rather large rental program. These are freshwater boats and usually cleaned up and serviced pretty well before sale. YES they are rental boats, but ones I've seen are pretty clean. I will look up name of dealership for you.

Really sweet looking 190 Montauk on Ebay right now in North Carolina. No bottom paint and a 135HP Verado. Wish I was part of the 1%.

There is little if any discernible difference in performance between the 190 Montauk with a 135 or a 150 HP Verado engine.

A 135 powered Verado could be a good buy.

Baf.....

Between this site, Boatrader, numerous Craig's lists and EBay, the bases are pretty much covered.

I have been following the listings for Montauk 190s for about 2 years since I sea trialed one at McCarthy's BW dealership in Brielle, N.J. It was a 2007 with a 115 HP Mercury 4 stroke, bottom painted with canvas and the cushion package. Nice boat but I did find it a bit slow. I remember pinning the throttle and not being impressed with top speed with only two of us on board. Since then, I've checked the Whaler performance sheet for that set up and it documents 40mph at wot. Hmmmmm. 40 mph would be fine for me if that is really the case and fuel efficiency should be excellent. Perhaps there was an issue with that particular boat/engine/prop.

Anyway, there are 135 Verado listings that come up every now and then. I've seen at least 3 in the last 6 months but they seem to demand around $7K more than a 115 HP equipped boat. Seems way too high over the 115 HP to me.

I currently have an 1989 classic Montauk 17 with a 2003 Yamaha 90 HP 2 stroke. It's a great boat but doesn't have the beam and sturdy feel of the Montauk 190. I've owned it for 16 of its 23 years.

Though sturdy and beamy, I was surprised with the continuing lack of storage on the 190. The console size is reduced by the storage of the battery and the forward port and starboard raised sections of the bow are sealed. The compartments at each side of the stearn are small. However, the helm seat does have storage and having a built in fuel tank is a major advantage.

So...I will continue to look at the listings as they pop up, perhaps one will come my way that I just can't pass up. I wish the same for you.

Good luck with the pursuit....it's part of the fun.

Jim.

Thanks for the responses everyone. That 190 in N.C. is sweet, with a lot of extras, but I've decided to go with a new boat with the 150hp. My dilemma is that I haven't seen a 190, only pictures, and no dealers nearby have one in stock to view. Does anyone in the New Orleans area have a 190 I can come by to look at? I want to see what I'm buying before spending 40 G's.

BAF,

Check with MarineMax in Pensacola and Gulf Shores.

If all else fails I'd be happy to show you mine in Spanish Fort, AL. Sorry, it's not for sale. butch6494@gmail.com.

Thanks Butch. Marine Max's closest Montauk 190 is in Jacksonville. My wife and I will be going to Pensacola next weekend. If no one in New Orleans responds I may take you up on the offer to look at your 190.

There are 3 Montauk 190s on EBay right now. All non-bottom painted. Two with 135s and one with a 115. The same 135 equipped boats did not sell last week with non reserve-met high bids at about $23k each. They have been relisted. The 115hp boat posted today and is a running reserve protected auction, starting at $1k.

Seems by this, the market rate for this set up with a 135hp motor and good electronics is $23k. A 2007 115 package I sea trialed in 2010 went for about the same or a little less.

Whether the owners can live with letting them go for this price is another question to be answered.

Jim.
