My 86 Montauk for your Outrage. Theres gotta be someone out there who is just so tired of their Outrage. What, with all its extra space... just more room to put more junk, and who wants that cluttering up there decks! Probably about time to downsize to something simple, such as my Montauk! (Im only partially joking)

I think you've got that one backwards if you expect to make a deal!

I don't think you are that far off in thinking someone may want to trade down to a montauk from an outrage. I myself have thought about this lately under the following considerations:

A montauk may be a few years newer or at least have newer power than the outrage.

A montauk will be easily towed by a station wagon or a small utility vehicle instead of a truck based vehicle.

A montauk can be stored inside a residential garage more easily.

$3k for a mid-1980's Montauk with decent power? That'd be the deal of the century!

I'm kind of new to boating. In my mid-40's and only about 4 1/2 years into life as a boater. But I've heard of Whalers all my life. And to my newbie sensibilities, emotionally, a "Whaler" is a classic, low freeboard, elemental 13/15/17. Now, of course my rational mind says that Unibond construction is what makes a Whaler a Whaler with it's quality and durability. And from CWW I see how strong the following of the small classic Outrage is, and it makes me a little jealous that I don't own one, but AFAICT, the Outrage "experience" is not a "small boat" experience, and so far, I like small boats. If one day I were to get into blue water fishing out far in the "real" ocean, I might take some action as far as getting a classic Outrage is concerned.

BTW, my own personal definition of "small boating" is, "an intimate experience with the water". When I'm in the mood for a day on the water, I want to feel like I'm "on" the water, and be as close as possible to it while remaining dry. Sometimes I want to be IN it, whereupon I go surfing, (the ultimate "small boat" experience). The more isolated from the water, the less "small boat'y" the experience... a monster cruise ship being the ultimate example. As far as I can tell from reading, the classic Outrage 18 is a LOT more boat than just a foot and half longer than the the 16'7" classic Montauk, and thus it just doesn't fit my needs or interests right now. And if they weren't Boston Whalers, and didn't get such glowing reviews from you guys, I probably wouldn't look twice at them. But thanks to you guys, I'm jealous I don't own one.

pcrussell50,

if you can find one, get an Outrage 17. Best of both worlds, literally.

I actually had someone propose such a trade to me once. A buddy of mine loves my 1961 Nauset so much, he wanted to trade me his 18 Outrage for it.
I was willing to trade too; straight up.
So when he asked how much additional money I was willing to offer to even up the trade, I repplied, "none. Even trade. You 18 for my 16."
He didn't like my Nauset THAT much! : )

Yeah, I started this thread as more of a joke than anything. Not that I wouldn't actually make a decent trade. That 17' Outrage is a beautiful boat. I think if I knew I would be staying on the gulf coast I would certainly be looking for a 17-18' Outrage as my permanent life partner. Thanks for all the entertaining comments so far!

If I find a clean Outrage 19-I with the tilting console and new power, I may consider it. Otherwise, I like it too much.
