My new project is a '73 Outrage and needs a lot of patch and paint. Does anyone have any Desert Tan gelcoat lieing around getting old? I will need a quart or less. Let me know Jim

Spectrum can provide a freshly mixed quart for you in the original color. www.spectrumcolor.com/ You might have to tint it lighter for a perfect match. I have some and the can notes the shelf life to be about 6 months. |

Spectrum sells the small touch up bottels or large quantities, I beleive gallon is the next size. In either case the prices are CRAZY. With a shelf life of 6 months, I'm sure someone has some they need to get rid of soon. |

If you are doing the exterior of your hull, the color is not Desert Tan. It is Outrage / Light Gray. Which the spectrum off The shelf Outrage / Light gray is way off the mark.I would recommend skipping Specture as their colors have NEVER matched any of my boats. I source all of my gelcoat locally in pure white and tint it with color agents from my local fiberglass shop to match perfect. I use their gray, tan, and black tints to hit my color perfectly. I can usually buy a gallon of white gelcoat, all of the needed tints, hardeners and surface waxes for about $75 or less. |

In FL I recommend Mini-Craft, the supplier of Whaler's gelcoat I believe. But as stated, the prices for a qt are crazy. As for the outer hull color of the 73-82 boats, Boston Whaler has evidently lost the correct color code, bacause the color information they have given to both Spectrum and Mini-craft is wrong. I have bought the Outrage Gray from both, and both are the same, and both are nowhere near correct for either my 1975 Outrage or 1979 Montauk. For the 71-72 ribside 21's, there is no color code in existence. For my work, having both a qt of the Desert Tan and the Outrage Gray, I worked with mixing both colors. For the Desert Tan interior color, I lightened it up as needed by adding the Outrage grey. For the Outrage Gray exterior, I darkened it as needed with the Desert Tan. It works very well. I do not recommend the paste. Always work with the liquid. |

Take a look at Express Composits. You can send a 2"x2" piece to them and they will color match. Only problem with that is who wants to cut a hole in their boat. Their price is about 1/3rd of Spectrum. I just ordered a qt, but have not sprayed yet so I cannot attest to the matching. |

Some people have an eye for color matching and some people don't. Evidently Jeff and Larry are good at it. I worked in a paint store back in the early '60s, way before computer color matching and learned to do it well. Its not that easy, but go very slowly and you can master it. You have to look at the color, and try to figure what colors are in it. Awlgrip matched some paint for me for my Desert Tan 15 footer interior. I cut a sample from the console. The "matcher" works by eye, its his sole job. He told me computers ruined too many gallons of paint. Their main business is auto paint and its very expensive, Awlgrip is a sideline. The matched Desert Tan is dead on, and I used it to touch up some dings on the hull which is original, just sanded and polished. I used Spectrum paste gelcoat (basically tinted bondo) to fill the mounting holes in the transom It looks like it has a pinkish cast to it. Fortunately they will be covered by the outboard.rich |
