I am looking for opinions on what a 1993 21 Whaler Walkaround would be worth at base value. What I mean by that is in original condition nothing updated at all. No trailer no engine old electronics not worth keeping. This boat is not a gem its quite dirty overall but is structurally sound and offers a hardtop.
It needs new power as the old Mercury is seized up. The boat has been sitting on dry land (no trailer) but a cradle for over five years and there is a high possibility of some amount of gas sitting in the tank and fuel lines. It can't be worth all that much I wouldn't think but very little surprises me these days so who knows.

Thank You

Martyn

Martyn,

Are you looking at downsizing from your 25 Walkaround?

Don its too soon to make a call but maybe a possibility. If I did it would be like one extreme to the other. One boat needs nothing the other could be a nightmare. Price is important and I'm just not sure what the 21 Walkarund would be worth in a re-building stage.

Many folks look for great Whalers with blown motors so they can repower with the fantastic new outboards being produced. Post some photos & we'll comment....I understand that 21 is a great boat, I have the 19 Outrage of the same era.

I will try to get some photos up. Really not too much to see though. Its as described but a photo can sometimes do the talking. I agree with the repower but the price has to reflect the cost. The trick is what is that cost? So many times I see people asking close to top dollar for a Whaler that is nearly useless. I figure this boat with new power shouldn't exceed more than 30k. If new power is 18-20 plus rigging we can safely assume maybe 23k to throw a motor on it. That leaves about 7k for the boat but in poor condition it will need attention which converts to money. Electronics new canvas etc that could exceed maybe 3k. The entire fuel system is likely shot maybe the tank as well? Could you snag this boat for 5k? I doubt it but when you leave a boat to death what can one expect? 7-8k might be about right?

Depends on the seller. If you have cash in hand, I'd offer $3k as a standing offer and then be patient. There are still a LOT of boats out there that are NOT moving. If this one needs an engine and fuel system, it also likely needs upholstery and other work, which already puts you in the "married with children" category. Once you own it and do that work, a "divorce" will be expensive for you - you will lose thousands...maybe half of your total "investment".

Given that reality, you want to pay as little as possible for the acquisition cost.

I agree the owner can always re-power and take the chance to ask more. One thing about power boats they are useless without power.

There was a nice clean one with a newer 225 E-TEC and it sold for 25K I think 30k would be the top of the mountain with EVERYTHING in near perfect modern specification or like you said Buckda, sign the papers for a marriage agreement. It makes perfect sense.

That boat should do pretty well with a 225 on the transom. A modern 225 shouldn't be much more than US$16K on the transom, rigged. As described, 7 to 8K plus new motor doesn't leave alot of money to do the canvas, cushions and electronics before hitting $25K which I think is the max I would have invested in that boat.

But what I would do to keep cost down but get good power and economy is try to find a low hour BRP built Evinrude Direct Injection (a.k.a. Ficht) 225 for about $4K for that boat.

Peter that would be wise to find something in that range like the Evenrude. I see a ton of Yamaha F225 four strokes that are turned in from the fish camps. High hours yes but we'll taken care of.

Plenty of nice used 4 strokes or DFI's out there for cheap. They usually come with the rigging which costs a bunch. I think you could repower with a low hour motor for $8k or so and that would make resale palatable.
