Hi everyone. Seller says she is a whaler and I am inclined to believe it from my small amount of knowledge. She has no HIN, no stamp, nothing. Title is newer and not correct. Title states LOA of 15'.6". I measured 16'3" from tip to transom (motor mount area; not inside the small well in front of motor). 6'2" beam. She was right next to a clearly marked Whaler and has the exact same lines. She is clearly foam as I tapped the entire hull everywhere. I am buying her for a project for my 12 and 13 yr old boys and myself. Thank you for any assistance. Rick

Without a photo or two, it is impossible to say.

You have to host the images somewhere. Most use a site like flicker, picasa or Photobucket. Then you need to link to that image. To do that you type out insert your web address . |

I've sen the photos and it's definitely a Whaler, 16'-7" non-smirked with Desert Tan interior which makes it a 1972-1975 hull. |

Yes, thank you so much Tom for confirming. I guess I am a bit of a dinosaur in trying to pull in the pix. Tom also gave me some other great answers to questions I have asked: 1. pull the thru hull tubes 2. Will a Merc Big Foot 60hp 4 stroke EFI do well on my 16'? Tom has said yes; rated max 100hp. I am powering the boat with the intention of having my 12 and 13 yr old boys use the boat once we all get comfortable with them riding alone. I don't want to overpower for that reason. Just enough to plane and cruise WOT in the mid-upper 30s. 3. The boat is cosmetically in bad shape. I am sanding the entire boat down. I have decided to go the Interlux Perfection route; also adding bottom paint to the bottom to leave in the water. I have done bottom paint before using SEa Hawk anti-fouling for my old cruiser. 4. Saying this in the best way possible as I have always wanted a Whaler... I will be restoring her as an amateur and view any outcome as an improvement to her. i.e. May not replace the rub rail to original; won't be putting mahogany back in. 5. Assuming I don't replace the seats with wood; are there other alternatives to wood seats available on the internet? We have a large marine salvage yard in St Pete FL here but I would hate to put a Carolina Skiff seat on the Whaler in that sense. 6. As this is our 2nd boat I am also trying to keep it cost effective; knowing resale should be better when I am done. Thanks all. Rick |

I have also read much info about the smirk vs non-smirk. I appreciate the comments but for my situation I am not worried about the more comfortable ride for my non-smirk and dryer ride (warm water most of the year). As stated this is my 2nd boat for my boys. They will stay very local, fishing the flats, cruising the canals, hopefully keeping them out of trouble, hanging with friends, no skiing or kneeboarding as they don't care about that. My wife, myself and boys will enjoy the boat in what we intend to do with her. We live in and have boated in Tampa Bay for 20 yrs now; anything below a 21' boat in my opionion shouldn't leave the coastal area unless the weather were perfect. But that is another discussion..Thanks again. |

Rick, I have a 1975 as well, I put a center console (made it out of fiberglass) with a sitting position in front of it, I use a big igloo for a seat in the back, this holds the life jackets and a bunch of other boat stuff and needs. Whats nice about the cooler you can move it around and take it out to clean, or if you like to dive or ski move the cooler and it gives you plenty of room and its cheap. Face it if it is for your kids they are not going to want to sit down unless it is to eat/drink, also with a center console, standing behind it to drive gives you a better view of the area and where you are going. The console also gives you some storage area as well. I also mounted my battery/gas tank under the console keeps it out of the way. One more thing with the center console you can walk around on both sides of the boat which is a plus when fishing. Put a big bimini top up and let them have some fun...good luck |

Rick check your mail for some pictures, Another thing that I did was to mount the bimini top on the gunnel, this gives you room to stand under it with the top up. I use slide rails to move the top forward when not in use and tie it off to the front norman pin...If you have some questions let me know... |

Thanks again Richard. The gunnels have wood in them then I assume which I have been learning by reading the useful info on this site. 99% of the nonskid out by sanding with an orbital sander last Sunday for 6 hrs. Attacking the 1% of nonskid left plus will sand all inside of the boat Friday; gunnels, inside of hull and decking where there is not any nonskid. Plan is to then fill few holes I found, epoxy primer, 1st coat of interlux perfection, redo nonskid areas with intergrip, then 2nd coat. Doing all inside first then moving to outside hull and bottom paint. Not sure how I will get under the boat to be honest other than to lie on a creeper or dolly on my back. Any ideas on getting under where the bunks are would be helpful???? I have heard of jacking the boat up and putting it on foam blocks but not sure how to go about doing that. I have the added issue of any time getting busted by the city for leaving the boat and/or trailer in front of my house on any days beside Thur-Mon morning. I have to be able to move her on the trailer to the side of the house. Can't work on the boat on the side of the house. Makes it all more interesting. Gave the neighborhood a good white cloud last Sunday; no complaints yet. Most think I am crazy taking on the project just judging by her appearance but I can see through it. Haha. |

Just dump it on the lawn and have your buys (and maybe some neighbors) roll it over. |

I guess that could work. Then pickup the nose and winch her back on I guess. |

Any ideas to recreate the bench seats (no back) that the Whalers have that just run from gunnel to gunnel across the beam. Not sure if the 16'7" had them but I have seen them on the 13'. I want to keep this very simple. I know starboard is waterproof but don't think it would be strong enough to run across the 59" spread; unless it had a vertical support or two under it. I don't want to fiberglass over wood or anthing like that. Worst case I add a cooler/cusion seat for the helm. Just want to weigh the options before I decide.Options: 1. Small/short console (no seat in front of console) with bench seats of some sort to keep the boys seated while driving (bench in front of console also); can stand also. Helm bench could even add fold down bucket seats to bench at helm. 2. Medium console with seat in front of it plus with cooler/seat combo at helm. I don't want to add too much weight to the boat. We will be running for now with 540lbs of family with 2 adults and 2 boys. Plan is to add 60hp 4 stroke EFI so too much weight could drag us on planing.

Rick there was a 16'7" that had wood bench seats just like the 13 (forgot the name of the model someone here has a picture or knows the model name) but the wood bench would just sit on the inside lip like the 13. When they sold this model it was one step above the bare hull, It also had a Right side console, cables and steering ran down the right side of the boat. Also came with the side rails (something to hold on to)... |
