I am looking for a combo unit for Reel Easy, 1974 Outrage 21. Problem is, I know absolutely nothing about them so I am way in the dark. I have visited Bass Pro and asked a few stupid questions and got answers that I don't understand. I would be interested in units that perhaps not the latest whiz banger but still have some life. I know Jim is a pro at this so,,looking for some help. Other issue is I would prefer not to spend $700 for a new unit, but maybe I will have to.

Jim, I am going to assume JimH is going to move this to the Small Boat Electrical section. That said, I have a Lowrance Elite DSI 5 and love it. The sonar imaging is really amazing for this compact little unit. I was having the depth reading drop out at speeds over 40mph but with a little tweaking of the transducer but, was able to make some adjustments and tune that in. I bought the Plotter combo with the base maps and a 400/800mHz transducer and it was $350. It's a tough unit to beat for that price.

Also, I would recommend buying it or another other electronic from Star Marine Depot. I have been buying my stuff from them lately and have been very happy with their service and communication.

Thanks Jeff: I tries to find that model at Star and Lowrance site but didn't see. Perhaps they don't make it any more. Do appreciate your input. Nothing with 400/800 mHZ--as if that means anything to me. HA!

It looks like they discontinued that specific package with the base level charts and the dual band 455/800kHz transducer. Now they only offer the ELITE 5 DSI with quad band transducers and their new CHIRP technology which allows you to simultaneously use all 4 frequency bands front the transducer at once. Which now raises the base price another $200 - $250 dollars.
Amazon Prime has the Elite 5 DSI with the quad band 83/200 455/800kHz transducer still available for $479. That is the same unit I have only with a better tranducer (hence the $100+ price increase). That might be the best way to go.

Also, the kHz is the frequency at which the transducer emits it's pulses. The higher the frequency the better resolution of an image you can get. But, you also lose effectiveness great depths (say 200 - 400+ feet) with the higher the frequencies.
In this image you can see how the 200kHz image in the middle looks compared to the increased definition of the 455kHz image on the right.

What is the point of having the lower definition image if the higher definition is available?

#2 the lower kHz frequency provides lower definition however it work to greater depths that the higher frequencies cannot effectively work in and do it over a broader area of the floor.
