About to send this to a shop that can fix the cracked gimbal ring (looks like a shark jaw) for a reasonable price. I was thinking of replacing the entire Alpha 1 gen 1 outdrive assembly with one that has never seen salt water.
Seems like an outboard version would be far better for salt water, but then again this one has a heat exchanger so no salt water touches the engine so it is fresh water cooled and risers. Seems to go through zinc anodes very quickly
but before I transport it 30 miles to a shop with a reasonable hourly rate, was wondering if anyone is interested in a project boat.
this was a lake boat until 2011
Any suggestions on what it may be worth would be greatly appreciated.
I know that nice one with a working four cylinder was having trouble being sold at < $5K, and that they are worth a little more on the West Coast due to transport cost, so it is worth $5K minus repair costs minus headache cost :)

Many years ago I took a mercruiser 185 out of an outrage and put an outboard on it.The deck came right off and the transom is there for the outboard. Of coarse had to plug the outdrive hole and piece the splash well back together. If the boat is in exceptional condition it might be the way to go.

It is a shame as the Mercruiser has a heat exchanger and is fresh water cooled with special risers as well. The engine is more reliable, quieter, more power, easier to work on... It is just that corrosion on the outdrive, even with zinc anodes.
