I wonder if anyone can suggest a source for a pair of fiber glass gunnel covers for a 1989 22' Boston Whaler Outrage. My project boat had teak gunnels and these can be easily reproduced but the maintenance aspect of fiber glass is appealing to me.

Have you considered using Starboard? |

Another option is to refinish the gunnel with fiberglass and resin, kind of like they do with modern wooden canoes and kayaks. They lay a thin layer of glass and resin over the wood and then you're done for as long as you own the boat. |

I replaced my 18 gunnels with starboard 15 years ago and never had any issues. Used all of the original hardware and they came out great.

Thanks for the suggestions. I decided that I wanted to avoid the maintenance of teak and still wanted to stay somewhat original. Thus I opted to fabricate fiberglass covers. I built both a port and starboard plug from which I made a fiberglass mold. Next I will make the parts from the new mold. Loads of work for a one off but I couldn't think of any options... Thanks again for your thoughts |

I used aluminum on my 18 OR as the fiberglass ones core had gone bad. Painted them desert tan with gray no-slip sections (3m type). Came out well. Aluminum was bent to form the inside edges by the people that make the aluminum parts for Boston Whaler- CPD. |

I have completed the new gunnel caps. Here is a link to a couple of photos if interested. |
