Help. My steering on my '77 Montauk needs a new cable. Can I replace just the cable or do I need to replace the whole unit? Any help would be appreciated!

Hey Bama, first you can buy a kit with new steering head included at about the same price as just a cable... and unless you have removed everything and tested you can't be sure it's the cable and not the head, the rod that passes through the tilt pin on motor or some combination of the above.. I would recommend that you replace the whole thing (about 120 bucks)!!! Also, Teleflex has changed cable ends to head recently and you might have to buy an adaptor to fit a new cable to the old head!!!! Also, you must unscrew console base and tip console to the side (tip to stbd is best) to remove and replace the cable.. On all of my Montauks I have cut a new hole , on center, in the console shelf to allow for less kinking of the cable... std factory installation passes cable through hole in stbd side of console shelf and then curves it to center and down into cableway creating a nasty and unnecesary "s" curve... don't be shy about removing console screws and tipping console.. a real piece of cake! e-mail me if you want more advice or encouragement! I've got plenty of both! Happy Whalin'.. Clark... The Old Man and the Sea
