I have a 1987 Yamaha 70hp on my 15' Sport. The power tilt and trim wasn't working when I recently bought the boat. I was told that there was a bad seal somewhere and that if I added hydrolic fluid it would work for a while. I added the fluid and bled the system and it did work. About an hour later I tried again and it barely moved. I checked the fluid and it was foamy. I was able to get the engine up about half way and it has held that position for the past three days. I'm thinking that this means that the piston seals are Ok and the problem is probably that the pump is introducing air into the system. My two questions are: 1. Is my assumption correct? 2. How hard is it to replace the pump?Bill Yovino

My experience with Power Trim problems is, unless you're a competent engine mechanic with a good repair manual, take it to a Dealer. On Mercurys, to even get to the hydraulic parts under the engine bracket, one side of the bracket has to be removed and un-bolted from the boat. |

Thanks. Mechanics in my area are already booked up til September, so I thought I might give it a try. Guess I'll have to manually lift the beast until then. |

One unique method I have used to support the engine while I added PT&T to my 70Hp Johnson was to use an automotive engine lift (the variety that looks like a crane). Despite what it said in the instructions, 70Hp Johnsons need one of the brackets removed to install PT&T, so I guess it's common... "Where2"? |

Are Evinrude parts available for this job? It seems like installation of a CMC "trim and tilt" bracket would be easier, and maybe less expensive. And you'll pick up a 5" setback besides. |
