The motor I just bought for my 1984 15SS is not holding trim position. If I trim it up it will drop down after about 5 min or so. Anyone have any idea what could be causing this?

If it is dropping gradually over the 5 minutes then you probably have a bad seal in the hydraulic ram. If it is quickly dropping at the 5 minute mark as though somebody pushed the trim switch, then I would guess you have an electrical issue.

I had a similar problem on an OMC unit. Turned out it was the seal on the "check" valve. On the OMC, it is near the top port side. It's used to fill/bleed the unit with fluid.

It's your check valve. Cheap and easy to replace if you can get to it. On my Yamagucci you have to remove engine. Takes 5 mins to replace once accessible.

Adding a couple of ounces of "automatic transmission fluid conditioner" (from auto parts store) to the power trim fluid may swell up the seals and solve the problem.. like chicken soup ... can't hurt! And it has worked for me! Just a thought.. Clark.. Spruce Creek Navy

Thanks for the help guys I figured it had to be an internal seal because its not leaking any fluid. I guess im off to buy a repair manual & see what it takes to change the seal.
