I'm new to this forum. Great stuff!
1. I need to replace my dual metal (rusting) gas tanks (6 gal) on my 17 Newport ('87). Is the area under the dual facing seat the same size as the Montauk? I would love to fit a larger tank in that space. I read some great info posted on replacing Montauk tanks and did not know it the same tank sizes would apply.
2. I have an area approx 5" in diameter above the water line on my hull that has been patched with a fiberglas coating which dried grey and is not too smooth. I would like to finish/repair the area. Any comments suggestions would be appreciated.
Thanks in advance

Welcome!

I'll take the fiberglass repair question...

Assuming that the fiberglass repair under the grey gelcoat is ok, you could just sand down the gelcoat and recoat. Acutally, when you sand down the gelcoat you should be able to see if the repair underneath is ok or not by looking for delaminated fibers and other evidence of failure.

Anyway, if the repair is good, you could order a color matched gelcoat paste repair kit from www.spectrumcolor.com and fill with that, sanding and then buffing per directions to get the original looking finish back.

Read the directions on the Spectrum website and then come on back here with any follow up questions.

If the repair is bad, well then its probably a good idea that you looked at it anyway.

On the Montauk vs Newport tank size, Newports are a little rarer, so you might measure the distance between your RPS (reversible pilot seat) legs and post it here and ask how it compares to the Montauk. I think the Newport RPS is wider.

And finally... you might check out the newcomers guide over in the Meta Forum. It contains some useful things like:

-Please don't post two questions in the same thread. It means the answers get interleaved.

-Please try and make your thread titles clearer. (this could have been 'gelcoat repairs' and 'Newport RPS tank dimensions.

-Expand Topics to 2 years and then use your browser search fuction to see if some info is already out there.

Not that your're doing that badly. But I think you would have had an answer earier if you had used a different subject line.

I have an 88 Newport that was dealer converted to a Montauk. Under my rps is a 28 gal tempo tank. The seat is raised with mahogany 2x4's and have hinges on the front and wing nuts on the rear so that the seat pivots forward and up when I need to add fuel. I gave a detailed description on the set up about a month ago. Email me for more details if this is an option for you and i will reply w/ info.
