I'm restoring an '82 Montauk and so far I've removed all the teak and the center console. Upon closer inspection it looks like the console is painted rather then covered with gel coat. This is my first Whaler restore and I'm not too up on my whaler manufacturing lore. What do you guys think, is it painted or gelcoat??

When a Whaler leaves the factory there are no painted surfaces--everything is gelcoat. Your painted console is not in original condition.

the boat is original, been in my family since '85, belonged to our next-door neighbor before then. He bought the boat new. I guess I should have worded my question, did then consoles on the '82 Montauks come painted or gelcoated? So i guess it is gelcoat??? wow, i've got a lot of sanding and polishing to do!

Thanks for your help...
