Author Topic:   Fuel Filter on 88SPL vs VRO System

I am changing over my leaking VRO fuel pump on my 90HP V4 to the type of fuel pump used on the 88SPL.
I premix my fuel and cannot see spending $250
for a new VRO pump.
The $50 replacement fuel pump has a screen on the pump itself and as far as I could see from any of the drawings, no other fuel filter.
I can, of course put an in-line filter in the intake in an addition to the built-in screen but was wondering about the pressure drop through the additional filter.
Has anyone had experience with the 88SPL. Is there any other filter in addition to the built-in screen on that engine?

If you don't have one install a water separating filter assy it will cause no restriction in fuel flow and do a lot more good than an in line filter.

Hank, good idea. If you have a stationary tank it may be a good idea to install a water seperating filter. Go with 5/16 fuel line (Shields puts out some great alchohol resistant hose rated for a 2 minute burn). You will not have to worry about fuel pressure drop as long as the fuel pump is working properly. An inline filter (O.M.C.) will not affect the fuel pressure either. Steve ps You can mount the seperator and canister right in front of the outboard well. Plenty of room.

Dick and Steve, thanks for your reply about pressure drop. I think to start I'll just add an OMC in-line filter. As for your suggestion about a water separator, I've looked at units like the Racors but these seem to me to be a little overkill. Any suggestions about alternative units ? Although my 1984 Evinrude has lasted for 18 years without a water separator I agree that logically a water separator is desirable. I'd install one if it were reasonably priced.

Racor filters are great but as you stated they are overkill. Both Tempo and Sierra make units that are reasonabley priced and will do the job. I have the Tempo unit on my boat and it will use the Mercury, Sierra or Tempo replacement filter.
