So what would you buy, what type and make? How much would you spend? Whats the point you decide to bite the bullet and buy the new motor?

There are a lot of great deals on two used two strokes. People are upgrading to four strokes that means trade ins are available. I got a great deal.

Also you might want to look for NOS or new old stock power. I got a 1990 outboard with no hours on ot for less then half of what I would have paid for new one. Keep your eye on ebay for deals like the like I got.

Good luck,

I would think about what you mainly use the boat for. If you just cruise and are not concerned with hole shot and top end then go with the 4 stroke. If you want to save some money, like top end speed and the hole shot then 2 stroke it is. Size is your next question. 70,90,100,115. I have a 115 that weighs about the same as a 70 4stroke. I feel I like the extra power for skiing and being able to handle loads with no problem. It is also nice to cruise at 40 mph while turning less than 4500 rpm. But I know many people that a 70 is all that they want and they can almost troll with theirs. It just depends on what you use the boat for.

Since Bigshot and DVisko have not contributed here yet, I will.

The SuziRudeJohnny DF70 is a marriage made in heaven for a Classic Whaler 17. I would not hesitate a second to do it again.

I challenge you to find a Whaler 17 owner who has powered with this engine who is not similarly thrilled with it.

Ever wonder who keyswhale is? Could it be an alias? Naw, I'm just paranoid, in spite of all the identical similarities.

You are paranoid. You must walk down the street looking over your shoulder. The guy came here to ask a question, leave him alone,

Only name I've ever used on this forum, just feed up with a 1990 70hp evenrude. It ain't made for salt water, and tropical breezes. Would like to spend more time on the water and less on the motor! Paul

I'm sure it's a coincidence that all three of these persons JUST happened to be here in rapid succession, as close as 3 minutes, on a Sunday evening.

If you believe it, I've got a bridge I'd like to sell you.

GOOD GRIEF, lhg!

Maybe. . . Well, no. I don't care whether they are the same or different.

Do you trust anyone?

That's a bad, Bugsy. You don't turn away hostility with insults, you only amplify it.

KeysWhale. Good luck with your purchase.

I will respectfully disagree on the notion that your hole shot will be slower with a 4-stroke. On my old boat (non-whaler) I replaced a Mariner 60HP 2-stroke with a Honda 50HP 4-stroke and my hole shot was very much improved. Both motors weigh about the same. That said, I've got that 50HP now on my 17' montauk and I'm very happy. I'm not breaking any speed records, but I can go all day on 6 gal of gas and in the ocean I rarely want more speed.

So what would I buy? Any good 4-stroke (I'm partial to Honda and Yamaha). How much would I spend? Whatever I can get one for new. When to buy? As soon as you're tired of your old motor. :)

Since you asked:
Buy a 90hp Johnson. Head snapping holeshot, cruises 32mph@4000rpm's, 46mph@WOT. Reasonably priced, reliable, quiet and thrifty on gas. It also comes with a 2 year, non declining warranty and weighs less than any 70hp or above 4 stroke.
What else is there?

KeysWhale was the Evinrude losing paint just sitting in the garage. My 1991 GT 100 had horrible paint. I don't think OMC used primer for a few years. As for the new engine look at your needs and go with 70 Evinzuki 4stroke or 90-115 2 stroke. I like the 2 stroke for my needs, but that does not help you much. If money is not to big an option get the 115 Optimax when it comes out. That will be my repower if I ever need one. My classic 115 idles rough, but overall runs great.

Most of the issues are corrosion related, and age. I'm thinking that the economic breaking point for a new motor is pretty close. I have a damn good mechanic, who comes to the boat. I'll see what he recommends. The Suzuki idea might be good, but you need a good local mechanic. Most dealers here in the upper Keys are Merc, and you see mostly merc and yamahas out on the water. I have a buddy who has a yammy, says it runs great, but the parts are too expensive. Or maybe that was the time he broke down in Bimini.
