I'm going to revamp the used rps I recently purchased. Although the wood backrest is in excellent shape, the fabric cushion needs replacing and the plastic legs need help.
The cushion replacement is simple plenty of sources out there but the legs are another story. The legs are chaulky and faded with the fibers starting to show thru.
I'm going with white (yes white) cushions so I was thinking of painting the legs with some left-over white west marine topside paint.
I was a little concerned with how to apply and how well the paint will adhere.
Has anyone done something similar?

Others may have a better idea of how paint will adhere to the plastic legs.
If it is problematic, I can tell you of one primer that will work. It is a nasty solvent primer called XIM. This stuff is so tough that you can primer paint formica. It comes as spray or brush on in white and grey.
I've used it on both polyurethane and formica. Our painter used it as a primer for new fiberglass pillars (and their plastic bases) that were installed on our porch.
I would have absolutely no hesitation in trying it on RPS legs, if it was my boat.

I would not paint the legs. If you do, every time they get bumped and nicked there will be a dark spot showing.
The easiest way to improve the look of distressed plastic legs is to apply some Penetrol to them. This will dramatically improve their appearance. It's relatively inexpensive and easy to apply too.
If the brown color is not what you want then you should probably buy a new set of black legs from a Whaler dealer. Whaler still has some in inventory left over from the last Montauks. When they are gone, they are gone. They will cost you $237 plus shipping though.
I may be having some brown legs made by the OEM of the legs in the original brown color. If you would like a set of those they will cost about $150 plus shipping.

The previous owner of my 88 Newtauk painted the legs from brown to white. The piant is chipping of and I am letting it. There is no way I am going to sand or blast them down. Somethings are best left.

I would be interested in a spare set of RPS legs. Did you ever put an order in with the company out you way? Are these the legs you are offering?

I have not ordered any legs yet. I just got pricing info from the OEM yesterday. The price is very dependent upon how many are going to be molded because of the economies of scale involved. A good part of the expense is setting up the mold which is the same cost for one pair of legs or a thousand.
I probably will not order any legs unless I see some serious interest in them from at least half a dozen people; it's just to expensive to bear the cost by myself.

I had forgotten about penetrol. I also have this wipe-on polymer product called "poly-glow" which leaves a clear shin to protect the surface and restore the surface of f/g boats. Maybe that would work better. I'm not opposed to brown as long as it isn't faded and chalky.

My comments were assuming George is committed to painting. If so, I would wouldn't hesitate to use XIM primer. In general, I would agree with Tom. Sooner or later, paint chips.

Mine are painted black. How do I remove the paint? Will paint remover hurt the plastic legs under the paint? Will sanding hurt the legs? Thanks Archie
