I have recently purchased a Montauk 170 2003. I am looking for a good live. Does anyone have any experience with this. I know I could go the cooler route but I am looking for something more permanent. Any thoughts or experiences would be appreciated. |

Butch, I have a Clear Water Bait Systems live well http://members.aol.com/jh6040/clearwater.htm . I had it custom made to 30 gallons so it would fit where the cooler seat in front of the console mounts. He also built-in a mount for my oxygen system. With both of these systems I can keep bait alive for weeks. |

Here's how I did it. Not sure if it will fit your needs but this keeps bait alive and in perfect shape all day long: http://members.telocity.com/~mwolfe/whaler/livewell.html A side note, the smoother the ride for the bait the longer they will live. i.e. the back of the boat is better for the bait than the front if you drive though anything rough on the way to catch the fish. |

Thanks for all the info. I can't wait to hear about the one with the mahogany lid. I have been looking at the benbait or baitben. The 15 gallon model looks pretty good. |

Butch, I've made a couple of live wells that work nice. Here's a pic http://briefcase.yahoo.com/reelescape1 If you decide to build yours, I'll give you specifics on the way I've built these. You could use any lid you want, I use plexiglass. I think I've got about maybe $40 in one. |

Reelscape, Those bait wells look nice. I'd like to put something together that I could mount/remove from my Montauk rear swim platform when needed. The small one looks about the right size. Thanks for the pics, Barnett |

I bought a 20 gal white garbage can and put opposite of the battery. I tie it to the rail so it can taken out easy. I used PVC pip to run a drain overboard so I can keep 12-15 gal in the baitwell. I rigged a small bilge pump from the botton and spray on the surface of the baitwell. I know that the motor in the baitwell will heat the water, but I wanted to be able to take the baitwell out of the boat and not have anything sticking out. I put a frozen pop bottle in to keep it cool. All of the info I get says to change the water. I keep a collapisble bucket in the boat (2-3 gal) and just pour fresh water into the baitwell and let the excess drawn out. It keeps shrimp, pogies and cocahone minnows alive pretty well. I will try some new modifications this year to make it work better. Good luck, best part maybe $50.00 total |

Kodiak 14 gallon fits perfect btw. pilot seat and cc. Captain sits on livewell and reversible seat faces aft for 1 or 2 fishermen to do their thing. I have had this livewell for 10 years and love it. It will keep 18 pogies alive all day on the hottest day since it is in the middle of montauk, under bimini. Great setup. Shoreway and others carry the Kodiak. Rule 350 gal. pump is mounted to transom and hose runs up under side rails to livewell. Discharge hose hangs over side. |

I just found the do-it-yourself instructions from my kodiak plumbing kit. If anyone is interested in these then let me know and I'll scan the pamplet. It has good info on stuff like lights, what water rate is required, etc.. |
