I just received my 2 peice rub rail, but I got 3 peices. 1 large white piece and a black piece that obviously slides into the the white one. The white one looks like it fits over the gunnel. I also asked the dealer what glue and was told it screws on. I got a bag of ss pop rivits. Should I use screws or pop rivits to attach base of rub rail? The other peice is a white rub rail that looks like goes over the gunnel and should be glued on. Is this normal or did the dealer make a mistake? Also, I plan to run wiring for the bow lights in the channel. The black piece will have to inserted and pushed the whole length. Any tricks to do this or lubricant to make the job easier?

Read the above link, I just did 2 of them. What model do you have? The thin piece does not need to be glued nor should it. Used the pop-rivets....trust me. The rest is just pure hard work that is very rewarding when done. Make sure you have 3 people minimum and BEER!

I just read the rub rail reference. I think it answered all my questions, but one I'm not sure of, if I slide the black rail insert or try to snap it in the reciever track a little at a time. Is that what the rubber mallet is for? The BW is a 16/17, 1969 vintage and will be a modified Nauset when I'm done.

I did not use a mallet, instead I used a gasket scraper(wide screwdriver) and push it in about 6" at a clip and just wrapped it with my fist. I takes a while but easy to do, especially after putting the other stuff on and popriveting it.

Going to install my rub rail in the next couple of weeks on my 16'. In the reference section it states, "It appears the L-molding is used on the 13-foot and 15-foot hulls as a shim to give the receiver track a better fit to the hull-deck joint." My question is should I use the L-molding on my 1970 16-foot hull or just go with a 2-piece installation?

No you use it on all the models except the newport i believe. My Montauk had the 3 piece so I replaced it with the 3 piece. My Newport does not have the inner rail for some reason.

rb,

Yes, you need to use the L-moulding.

Nick,

The reason the Newport does not use the L-moulding is because the thickness of the fiberglass of the deck serves the role of shim for the rub rail. Likewise the Bass Boat and Tashmoo models would not use the L-moulding, but all other 16'-7" Whalers will.

I'll revise the Reference article to add this additional information re the 16/17 hulls and the Newport.
