Bob,

Although you could probably buy one on eBay eventually, I would suggest going to your local Evinrude, Johson dealer and buying either a separate Trim/Tilt switch that mounts on the dash, or if you have a Binnacle mount, I would buy the switch that mounts inside the control handle.

All the parts are still available from your dealer.

Bob

The trim switch broke in the handle of my control and I replaced it with a simple toggle switch mounted on the dash. Momentary on/Off/Momentary on. It's not as convenient as having it in the control handle but it works fine.

you will need the relay box. This is easily found on E-Bay and I believe is the same for all OMC engines. It is just a black box about 3x4" that routes the power to up or down. The trim motor has 2 wires as you state one for power, 1 ground. The relay box switches the power so the motor either spins forward or reverse.

I understand there are 2 different boxes.

One is a 2 wire system and the other is a 3 wire system. I am not sure exactly what year they changed from the earlier 2 wire system.

I have been through this twice now. Once with my boat and then a buddies boat... We both have the 3 wire system and when we needed parts, we made sure that the parts were for the 3 wire system.

It is easy to tell.. If you have a 2 wire system, you will have two wiring coming out of the Trim motor on the engine bracket, then you need to buy the 2 wire Relay Control box... maybe a 3 wire system will work but you may need to rewire it, I don't know.

I did not know you didn't have all the parts with your 75 HP Johnson.

Sorry,

One mistake above... The Trim motor does only have two wires....

It is the Trim & Tilt Relay box that either comes in the 2 or 3 wire system.

Not sure about the 2-3 wire system but it makes sense. The only thing I can think of is trim and tilt and just tilt. I believe you need the 3 wire, my 70hp had that. Double check with a dealer or Steve Leone but I think 3 wire is what you need for anything newer than 1979 or so.

I've gone through 2 OMC tilt and trim switches mounted on the control lever. They only lasted a couple months each. I'm wondering if I should just go with the a dash mount momentary switch and be done with it, or try the OMC handle switch again. Anyone had a problem with the life of these OMC switches? The engine and binnacle control are 2000.

RWM,

I have never had any problems with my switches in the Control Handle... I have two that are 1985 vintage.

Bob Kemmler,

I found the part number for my "Junction Box and Trim Gauge Kit". It is P/N 174181. This kit came with the Junction Box and the external Trim/Tilt switch and was installed on my 1985 70 HP Evinrude. I exchanged the external switch for one that went in the Control Hanlde... I like the switch in the Handle, some like the external switch...

Good Luck in your search...
Joe

Bob,

Have you decided on a tuna tower or a radar arch? You may need an adapter to allow a second station!
