My '96 moutauk has taken some rough treatment lately in the ocean and the guard rails keep shaking loose. Today I attempted to tightem them and to my surprise about half of them are stripped! I didn't strip them by applying too much force, when I attempted to tighten them they just spun almost effortlessly. Is this really that common on moutauks? Why do they strip so easily?

I guess I'm going to have to get a drill, a big bunch of marine tex and a syringe and plan a day in the sun fixing stripped screw holes. :( Anyone have a favorite size to drill the holes to?

Howdy, WW.

Yes, stripped rail mount screws are common.

There are several good and permanent fixes. Most of them involve bigger, stronger screws than the #12 wood screws used originally.

Marine Tex is not my favorite.

Do a search on stripped screws and you will have plenty of proven options.
