When removing my old one piece rubrail alot of gelcoat came off with it. MY question is do I need to fill in all these little divits and holes before installing the new one? Or will the new one cover thie mess up? I dont what to see little bumps in the final product.
Thanks John

If replacing with a 3 piece, it will cover and all will be good.

I filled the divits in on mine. Yes it is a pain, but it will cover any exposed glass where water entrapment may cause problems later. It did not take that long to fill. Just patch it up like you are spackling wall holes. Just keep flat to avoid sanding later. I used a thickened polyester resin with putty knife. I won't use Epoxy anywhere on my whaler. I don't care what WEST systems says.

I'd be inclined to fill the voids (even if they are covered) for the same reasons Dave articulates.

I think this would be a prefect application for Marine-Tex as you don't need to worry about the color of the putty, the putty is already thick as it's designed for this sort of thing, and it will cure in no time so you can get on with the project.

Ok....I would also fill in where needed but was just answering your question as to if it would cover. I can't see the extent of the damage so I will leave that to your discretion.
