Topic: Do I need to worry about a cracked solenoid housing?

As I was tightening up the bolts that attach the ignition switch leads, I cracked the #(@*$&* housing of my brand new solenoid. Part of the crack has probably a 1/32" inch wide gap, but the rest of it is closed. It goes the width of the unit (not the circumference), and there is a metal band that goes all the way around it to mount it to the housing. I expect this to keep the crack from getting worse, but do I need to worry about water intrusion or anything else getting in there? Thanks!

Shrimp, As long as it is structurally sound and well secured, you probably don't need to worry about a crack in the housing. To weatherproof it, I would recommend troweling on some silicone sealant. Al W. |

Shrimpburrito - as Al W. mentions, you should be alright and I second the silicone adhesive/sealant suggestion. Mechanically, the operation of a solenoid is not rocket science and there are no close tolerances or fits involved. With the metal band and the silicone sealant, you should be fine. --- Jerry/Idaho |

Al & Jerry - Thanks alot for the info. I appreciate it. I sealed it up with silicone, so hopefully that'll be the last I have to deal with it. |
