It was a good engine for a carbed engine. It is now only available as a 70 or a 90, still with carbs.

It has all of the vulnerabilities of a carbed engine.

I would recommend an EFI 4 stroke as an alternate. Merc, Johnson and Suzuki offer some fine EFI engines in that range.

The JohnnyUki 70 is great engine for a 16/17.

They changed the 100 to a 90, and the 80 to a 75. The 100 and the 80 are almost the same engine. The crabbers on my bay, all use the 100 and 80 yamaha. They bought them as a package and use them everyday. They love them. They idle ALL DAY, and use only 3-4 gals of fuel for the entire day. They put so many hours on them and still love them, EFI is nice but these carbs are great too.

Like captbone said , they just renamed the 100 to 90 and 80 to 70. same motor, Is the merc 4-stroke 90 the same as the yamaha?

I have a 2002 Yamaha 80 and although I only have 30 hours on it, I love it. It has great hole-shot, good top-end, sips gas and starts on the first turn of the key.

The only downside I see to it is the weight -between 350 and 375. I will tell you that the weight has not been an issue on my boat, a Roth-Bilt 18.

If you are gonna get the 70 or 75hp, go with the Zuki/Johnson 70 and save a few lbs and get a better warranty, EFI and less money. If getting the 90hp, then look at the merc and save a few bucks being the same powerhead. If 39mph is fast enough, get the zuki. If you need 42, get the 90 yamaha.

BS, I almost bought the Suzuki, but opted for the Yamaha because of better dealer coverage. I'm glad I did - the Suzuki dealer from whom I would have bought my motor (and the only Suzuki outboard dealer in South Central/Southeast Connecticut) appears to have gone out of business.

The difference is you WON'T need the warranty with the Zuki :)

PS the Johnson is the same engine. i imagine Johnson dealers are more readily available. In FL we have mucho zuki dealers.

Did they change the 80 into the 75 or 70? I thought it was the 75?

Excuse my ignorance, but why refer to Johnuki? Do Johnson and Suzuki share powerhead or something?

Got to repower the Newtauk this year, and trying to figure out what to get. 39 mph is plenty fast for me.

Not only do they share the same powerhead, they share EVERYTHING but the wiring harness and white paint. My Suzuki is an Evinrude, now they are Johnsons since 02.
