Author Topic:   Difficulty mounting outrigger option on '76 Montauk

When I went to mount the base on the grab rail of my '76 Montauk (shipped '75 w/casting platform) it was obvious that there was not enough of a straight run of rail on the forward loop to allow the casting to sit flat and permit seating at all three points.

Was there a change in the rail around the console? Did the height of the platform require a different bend in the forward loop of rail?

Has anybody had any experience/difficulty with this?

Thanks
Bill B

Does anybody have one of these installed on a Montauk who would like to share some dimensional information on their console rails ?

Thanks

A friend of mine just gave me one of these cast aluminum outrigger mounting platforms (for Lee outriggers) as you describe. It needed minor repairs and I'm just getting it back today (or maybe tomorrow) from the repair shop. I held it in place when I got it, and I think mine is going to have the same problem. I have some ideas, but if you think of anything, please post (and I'll do likewise). I have a '77 Montauk. Either the rail or the base will have to be modified for it to fit properly. I was thinking of shimming up the base, but my buddy thinks we can tweak the rail. It may take a little of both...

Post if you have an update, though!

Anyone else?

I'm leaning toward the "adjust the rail" approach as a first choice with fabricating a new grab rail as a close second.

The adjustment route would result in the lower rail fitting being raised on the face of the console...Some holes to fill...no big deal.

I don't think that the change in fitting placement will conflict with the installation of the lower support arm for the outrigger holder casting.

Does anybody have any experience with "unbending" stainless rail?

Well after soliciting information from some of Whaler's original dealers and poring over the photos in Tom Clarks comprehensive catalog CD, I don't believe that these rigs ever fit the grab rail "nicely"

The 1977 catalog has a pretty good picture of the rig and it does not appear to bed completely in the casting. The curve of the tubing is very evident above the base.

I now may put off the bending and use hard rubber shims to compensate, although something that doesn't quite fit on a whaler is like an itch that won't be ignored.
