Two years ago, on my '79 Montauk, I replaced my Merc 90 with an Evinrude 70 4-stroke. The engine's been great and with all I've learned from this board and a little elbow grease the boat is looking good.
But..I have an issue that's renting space in my mind and am looking for some advice...When the new engine was put on the installation was initially botched. The bolt holes on the new engine had a different pattern then the old engine. The dealer filled the old holes with 3M 5200 adhesive, drilled new holes for the top bolts, and used lag bolts for the bottom holes.
I complained about the old holes being filled with 5200 rather than filled with dowels and/or epoxy, and also was not happy with lagging in the bottom bolts.
The dealer said with the Montauk he could not drill through the bottom holes and refused to line up the slightly higher "blind" bottom holes and bolt the lowers from the inside. The offer he made was to fill all the holes with epoxy and attach the engine with 4 upper bolts only. He assured me this would be O.K. and I accepted.
My concerns are this...
Did he really fill all the holes with epoxy? He painted over them, but a couple I can get at seem a little flexible like adhesive.
I can't see the lag holes? Did he fill them in with adhesive or epoxy?
Is attaching an engine of this size really O.K. with 4 bolts in the top area and nothing lower?
And given the reality of the above, do I really want to mess with it, fill and drill some more, or just replace the transom if and when a problem occurs?
Should I pull the engine, drill out all the suspect holes and fill with hardwood and epoxy? Maybe install one of the jackplates for sale on e-bay? What do you think?
Any advice??...Bob M.
