I just bought my first boat. It is an 88 Newport. The eye in the hull that the trailer winch strap conects to is pulling out. Anyone ever made this repair before? Thanks.

Owen:
If that "eye" pulls out I think it will pull the whole bow of the boat off. I think it goes through six inches or so of solid wood. I would repair it though to avoid water intrusion into the wood. You can unscrew the inner loop, which acts as a sort of nut to the outer piece. Right hand thread, I think bronze and strong. A boat that has been moored for a while may develop a "loose" bow eye due to the fore and aft changing direction of pull. My Montauk had a loose one, which I repaired with West System fiberglas and wood chips and fiberglass strands as filler.
Recommend search the archives for several to numerous references to repairs. Don't worry about it, just fix it.
