I own a 15' supersport with all teak and mahogany boards and all are very weathered. I have completely stripped the boat of all of the wood and want to sand and refinish all of it (what I could salvage as some was rotted). Any general pointers on this process? Specifically, I wonder if it is better to reuse the wood or is it just better to get fresh pieces and start from there. I'm new to the game so any advice from those experienced would be much appreciated.

I am in the process of the doing the same on my 15' Sport CC. My seats were in pretty good shape, but the side rails were all twisted and dinged, so i remade them out of 5/4 x 6 mahogany deck plank material. I stripped the seat plank using my thickness planer, taking off about a 1/16" each side. It cleaned up beautifully, not a trace of finish left. It also took off any oxidized wood and small dings. I plan to fill the grain, stain, seal with penetrating epoxy, and put on about 8 coats of Interlux varnish. Good luck, and try the planer stripping option if you have access to one. 5 minutes of machine work beats hours of stripping and sanding any day. |

Off topic a bit for Arthur and Mini: Do you find the seat height on your 15CC's to be sufficient to be comfortable? Mine has pedestals that are 17 inches high at the seat top, and it's too high for comfortable steering. Remembering my 13 Sport - the seat was too low to be comfortable. Trying to find a middle ground...
