Suitably impressed with my first test of Easy-Off Oven Cleaner (Original formula) on the transom of my 15CC, I sprayed the sides and part of the underside Saturday. Nice 65 degree day - waited the recommended 20-30 minutes. The rest is a blur of worn-out Scotchbrite pads, numb fingers, and BLUE stuff everywhere! Amazingly, the stuff does take off the lovely blue copper-based paint. However, for the removal of approximately 3 to 6 square feet of paint, I succeeded in coloring the entire alley behind my garage a pretty blue tint for 30 feet, along with my pants, shoes, and (thanks to holes worn in rubber gloves) my hands. I now have indelible purple fingernails (stylish if you're into that), several very painful holes in my skin, and - interestingly - no fingerprints on most fingers....
Summarily, I still recommend the procedure, but be ready for some awesome scrubbing, sore muscles, and a lot of environmental re-coloration; and a reasonable expenditure on a GOOD set of rubber gloves. (And, perhaps, a manicurist with a technical side)...

Ha ha! Been there, done that, and still have the scabs on my arms to prove it (the purple on my fingers has worn off). I decided to try the same procedure last week on my 22-Outrage after emptying my second gallon of PeelAway. Hey, the Easy-Off was only $3.50 a can at Wal-Mart. After a couple of cans I decided I had enough and went back to Sherwin-Williams for another gallon of PeelAway. That Easy-Off is nasty stuff.

Thanks for the update. I have been debating using the Easy-Off approach.

I think I will finish everyhing else first and hope the bottom paint falls off....

I have heard the Blue Man group in Vegas are a former bottom crew from California! I can't vouch for this though!!!!!! Have Fun

I removed some bottom paint with just scraping and wet sanding. The stuff works quite well on grass, too, as the bare spots in the lawn adjacent to the driveway will attest.

I WONDERED where those bare spots in my lawn came from last summer. I did the test parked on the grass. Thankfully, it was just a little bit. I am going after this blue demon with a 3 x 12 inch scotchbrite pad on a wooden handled holder, and heavy rubber gloves. I refuse to surrender! Adds a whole new meaning to "I've got the Blues..."

I realize we are supposed to stick with friendly Boston Whaler talk, but I can't hold back any longer! You guys using easy-off and any other cleaners / degreasers for that matter have to think a little bit. Where do you think those chemicals end up? In our waterways via storm sewers, ditches etc. I'm not an environmental wacko, but I do make a living in the environmental remediation business. One of the largest non-point polluters is the home owner for doing exactly what you describe in your driveways and lawns. If your going to use chemical based products outside, please consider what I just wrote, and I apologize for raining on your parade.

Well, it certainly was nice to hear from the environmentalist side of the fence. What type of collection mechanism do you use to prevent your windshield washer fluid from running into the environment? If you are in the remedial business, you might well be using some heavy equipment (like the firms use to dig up old gasoline storage tanks). How do you filter out the particulates from the diesel engines usually used on this equipment? Or is that a "necessary evil"?
I am unconvinced that 3 cans of Easy Off (already chemically neutralized by the copper it removed), ending up in the storm sewer (which - by the way - in Milwaukee, is actually interconnected to the sanitary sewer system), could somehow be of significant consequence to the environment.
Additionally, since this is a Repairs/Modifications forum, I suggest that observations like these be re-routed to a more appropriate forum.

The whole process of recreational boating involves silly abuses of the environment for the pure entertainment of the boater.

Perhaps we need to rethink the whole purpose of life. I think we should return to a pre-industrial life style. I'll send you all a letter on horseback to show I am serious.

Environmentalist simple view from simple minds--"if you can measure it--it must be bad". My vote is to stop technology now so that measurement tools don't get down to 1 part per quadrillion! If the technology gets there---that will be the standard.

JimH,

Although the horseback letter is an excellent idea, I'm apalled that you hadn't considered the effect of not only the horse "solid waste by-products" that will be contaminating our planet, but the obviously dangerous flatulence-factor!
