Hello all, I have a 1964 16' with all woodwork in the middle of refinishing. A past owner so kindly stained everything with dark red mahogany stain "like the old wood power boats" and has caused me to copy his work.I applied the Z Spar Mahogany Stain/Filler, waited a day and then one coat of varnish. The went went down on Sunday and is still a little gummy, though better every day. On Monday I brought all the parts inside and put them next to our boiler where the temp is always in the 70's and fairly dry. I called the Z Spar tech guy and he said that was normal but I am not sure, want to finish this job and move on. I wonder if anyone else has had this problem over any stain/filler?

How old is the can of varnish? Don't assume that it's recent, because you just bought it, it may have been old stock. I've had varnish take a few days to set up enough to handle. Probably normal. Don |

Did you first apply a wood sealer before stain/fill ? If you did, was it compatible with everything else you put down ?Is your stain/filler the same make as the varnish ? |
