I need help. The new 18hp motor I bought does not fit in the metal plate mounted on the inside of the transom. Should I re-mount this plate or buy a larger one? Also, can I protect my transom in some way? The transom is rounded. Is this 1972 whaler a sport or standard model? I really am a novice at this. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

karoox - I'm not much of an expert on the 13, but I might be able to provide some answers, and that might get other folks involved.

The 13' hull was the same for the sport and the standard, the difference is the steering. The standard was tiller steer and two thwart seats. The sport pushed the seats forward 12" and had a little console and a wheel, and the console provided a backrest for the forward thwart. Apparently (thanks to forum member TWC for the Boston Whaler Catalogue CDrom) there was a side and a center steering option.

The main problem people face with the older 13's is the notched transom and the 15" transom height. Most engines today are 20". Can we assume you bought a 15"?

The transom is 20". I removed the steering wheel and console. What should I use to protect the console? or does it need to be?

I am guessing that someone built up the factory transom to accomodate a new motor? I am unfamiliar with any metal plates on the transom. I own a 72 13' too. This was the case with my brother in laws 13'. He is a metal fabricator and built a small custom bracket to hold his 25hp Merc after he ditched the 55 johnson that he bought it with. West marine sells a out board braket that might suit an 18 hp for $69. The bracket might not be strong enough for an 18hp. I think the next step up is around $200. If your transom has been built up by someone it might be the easiest solution instead of cutting and reworking glass. If you bought the more expensive bracket you could use it with a higher hp motor if you so chose in the future. I run a older 50hp Merc and wouldn't trade it for anything, well maybe a new one.......DW

Read "jackplate" in a thread towards the bottome of the page, these guys have similar solutions but found cheaper methods.....good luck..Ask them about the jack plates. I don't have any experience with them...
