When I purchased my whaler the seller told me that the control cables werent working. I noticed that the main motor control cable had been repaired due to it having electrical tape in different areas.
When I took everything off (tape) I saw that the cable had been spliced in three different places I also noticed a lot of rust on the area where there wasn't any of the original jacket and rather loads of electrical tape.
Anyhow the two cables that had been spliced were both the positive and negatice power cable and the one that runs to the control box looked ok.
So I decided to cut both wires past the last splice and noticed there was still rust I continued further and further down the line to the point where there was the main cable jacket covering all three cables. I decided to continue and peealed back the main jacket and there was water. I ended up peeling all the way to the end and water had gone all the way through. I ended up leaving about a foot from the plug of both the pos/neg cable(where there's still rust. So my questions are 1.do you think its ok to just splice some new wire? 2.what could I use as a jacket to prevent water entering again? 3. West marine sells "marine" grade cables I noticed it said it was zinc plated is this really important to go with or just the traditional Auto cabling

FYI

When I purchased the boat I took it straight to the local mechanic who wanted me to replace the cables with new ones. Due to spending all of my money on the boat. I was thinking of just repairing it as it had been done before untill i could get the funds.
