I just got my new 2002 Johnson(Bombardier) 90 (2 stroke) back from its 20 hour servicing. I asked the mechanic to adjust the warm idle as it seems a bit high (in neutral, the engine is at 1,100-1,200 rpm). It appears he forgot, and I'd jsut as soon know how to do this particular task myself anyway.

1. Isn't 1,000 rpm+ too high?
2. What's proper (700-800rpm)?
3. How does one adjust the idle?

I would take it back to the shop, but I'd rather use the boat (1977 Montauk), and it seems to me that it should be fairly simple to adjust the idle - I simply haven't the foggiest idea how to do it/where the idle adjustment is. Can anyone help?

Thanks in advance.

I have the same exact engine (year and all) and the same exact Montauk ('77). Run it like it is set and if it doesn't work for you than run it by the dealer and they can do it while you wait. Since it is under warranty this is the safest way to go. Mine runs a bit lower at warm idle and sometimes I wish it was set higher (not to 1200 though)

7-850 is good in the water in gear. It does not matter where it idles in neutral it depends where it idles in gear while underway. Idle is not a set screw like some. you have to set the butterflies on the carbs and is not for the unexperienced. On muffs they idle high. If swinging a big SS prop you also need the idle higher in neutral. Take it back if idle is above 850 in gear while in the water, not on muffs.
