and what indicates a motors age?
It is a tiller steer 25 evinrude
a few questions...
1. Can anyone reccomend a good motor rebuilder
just in case my engine is bad? ( Long Island )
2. How do new Mercs compare to Johnsons?
3. If I buy a new motor- will the shop generally install it pretty cheap?
Is teleflex steering all extra etc.
A few tips please.
The tiller steer Johnson that came with the boat ran for a minute in a garbage can- but I have no idea how good/ bad she may be.
Sort of looking for turn key at my age instead of rescuing my son each weekend.
Thoughts on tiller steer engines ( it had standard controls too)
I have stripped the hull down completely- not a screw or bolt left on her anywhere. So the engine is just waiting for me to finish the hull. I'd like to have the motor looked over well and completely refurbished if she needs it and only if she'll be worth it compared to buying a new one for what $4K?
What might I spend on rebuilding it if it needs work? Thanks

I bought a new 25 Johnson (2 cylinder) in '96 and have had no problems. I run it hard and maintain it regularly. "At your age ??" If I were in your shoes??? Buy a new Yam and go fishing!

Howdy, MGWhaler.

Post us the model number. It tells the year.

To assess condition, first do a compression check, then a dynamometer run. Have both done by somewone who understands that he will not get the repair business if repair is needed. Then have the fuel pump, water pump and carb overhauled.

OMC 25s are legendary for reliability. Sixty years old and still in regular service are not unusual. The recent ('75 to date) 25s are the best of them all.

Tiller steer? On what boat? Thirteens are rated for 20hp with a tiller. Elevens for 10HP. With remote steering, double that for both. My choice for a Sport 13 is an OMC 25.

You have no need of a new engine. With good care and maintenance that Johnson 25 is as reliable as any 25 on the planet.

Red sky at night. . .

Any tiller will convert to a console steer in minutes. Don't bother rebuilding a 25hp when you can get a new one for under 42k and a nice used one even cheaper.

hmmm....42k seems a little steep Nick. How about giving the guy a little break here. I presume thats the solid 22 carat gold model....Steve

A new 25 hp should be under $2500. I'd get the old one checked out first, though. It's usually something simple to fix.

Looks like Bigshot missed the shift key, hence the typo 42K instead of $2K...

Hey gang
Seems it's a 1980.
I told the shop it ran well for a minute on demo when sold to me and that I just wanted the standard pre-season run through on her.
Inc' water pump, greasing the shafts and cleaning the carbs etc. They seemed happy to see a nice old evinrude and said that sometimes parts are hard to come by, but she should be good.
I'll give her a good try and risk frustration before I drop a bunch of money on a new motor.
Thanks for all of the input.
Sorry it took a bit to get back with the age JB- been busy of late.
