I'm thinking about installing some Courtesy/Deck Lights under the gunwales of my classic Boston Whaler Outrage 18. Has anyone tried this? Any suggestions on what kind of lights to use? I was thinking of using 4 of these, two under each gunwale but being LED's I don't know if they provide enough light. What do you guys think? Any other good place to place them?

All suggestions are welcome,
Thanks,
Zpeed7

I looked at these today, they are made by Hella marine and are super cool. They have quite a few to look at. They use very little power. I'm still waiting for a good LED anchor light. I've seen one so far on the market $100. I'm going to hold out for a while. By the way I like the looks of the ones you post as well. Here is the link...I never remember how to create a link :^/

My Outrage 18 had two courtesy lights mounted on brackets under the gunnels just aft of the forward fishing rod rack. I always thought another set near the rear rod rack would be nice but never got around to doing it. The light was adequate.

I installed courtesy lights in my Outrage 18 and I always wondered why they didn't come standard or more people do not install them on their own. They are a "must have" for anybody who operates their boat in low light conditions as I typically did while salmon fishing in the early predawn morning hours. The lights were great for tying leaders, baiting up or just generally groping around trying to find gear.

On my boat I installed a pair of Perko Fig. 945 surface mount lights (actually a navigation stern light) under the teak gunwale boards in about the middle of the boards. http://perko.com/cgi-bin/perko.pl?dis+945-stern_lights_info

The wiring to these lights was very easy to run requiring only a small mortise for the wire to duck under the lip of the fixture itself. I used a Forstner drill bit to create a 1/8" or so deep hole that the edge of the light partially overlapped. Short stainless steel sheet metal screws screwed into the teak held the light fixture in place.

These two lights filled the entire cockpit from the console back to the splashwell with soft light. For the forward half of the boat I installed a pair of Perko Fig. 946 flush mount lights (just like the 945 but flush mount). http://perko.com/cgi-bin/perko.pl?dis+946-stern_lights_info

These I cut into the hull just below the gunwale about half way from the Igloo cooler in front of the console and the forward locker, very near the base of the middle stanchion on the sides of the bow rail. I forget the exact size, but I just used a hole saw to cut the fiberglass and core out the foam. The wiring was the run under the rub rail insert and poked through to this hole and wired to the lights. Very simple and very effective.

A single on/off switch at the console controlled these four lights.

Did you ever get the LED lights you mentioned in June? I'm looking at some smaller surface mount LED lights at West Marine but not sure they'll be bright enough. What do yours look like? Where did you mount them? I was thinking of putting one vertically on the RPS side of the console on my Montauk so that I could read charts and tie up fishing rigs from the RPS. A "point downward" light would be useful here.

Bigs,

What brand lights did you use? I am considering adding some type of lighting to the stern of my Newtauk fixed to the side gunnels.

The same perkos that Tom has URl'd(flushmount). You just take a hole saw and cut 2 holes about 4-6" above the wood side trim closer to the stern......work and look great.

Foller the KISS rule, save money and retain integrity (of your hull) with one o' these, if you must, guys: http://www.altrec.com/shop/detail/15925/TZL

A D-cell flashlight and a 400,000 watt spotlight meet all of mah basic lighting needs.
